No — both Spain and Portugal are Schengen member countries. You only need ONE Schengen visa for this entire 10-day itinerary covering both countries. Since Madrid is your entry point, apply to the Spanish Consulate via VFS Global. The single Schengen visa covers free movement across all 26 Schengen countries. Is this the right package for a first-time Europe trip?

What’s the best time to visit Spain and Portugal?
April–June and September–October are ideal. Spring (April–May) is wonderful — mild temperatures (18–25°C), spring flowers in bloom, and fewer crowds than summer. Autumn (September–October) is equally beautiful with harvest season. July–August is scorching hot in Madrid (38–40°C) and Seville (42–45°C!) and very crowded. Barcelona is pleasant year-round as it’s coastal. We strongly recommend April, May, September, or October.
What currency do Spain and Portugal use?
Both Spain and Portugal use Euros (EUR) — very convenient for a twin-country trip! One forex card loaded with Euros works for the entire trip. Cards are widely accepted everywhere. Carry EUR 100–200 in cash for smaller purchases, markets, and tips. Get your Euros from Thomas Cook or BookMyForex in India before departure for the best rates.
Is Barcelona’s Sagrada Família really unfinished?
Yes! Antoni Gaudí began the Sagrada Família in 1882 and it is still under construction today — it has been under construction for 143 years! Expected to be completed around 2026. Gaudí himself said it would take at least 200 years. Seeing it half-complete with cranes alongside medieval stone facades is actually a deeply moving experience — watching humanity’s most audacious ongoing architectural project. Book skip-the-line tickets in advance — it sells out weeks ahead.

Doing two countries in one Schengen visa was brilliant — we hadn’t realised how seamless the border crossing between Spain and Portugal would be. Seville’s flamenco show was the most electric live performance I have ever witnessed — I had goosebumps throughout. The Real Alcázar is genuinely breathtaking, the most ornate palace I’ve ever seen.
