Meghalaya Family Tour Packages — The Abode of Clouds
Holiday Vibez curates Meghalaya family packages across the state's three hill regions — the Khasi Hills centred on Shillong and Cherrapunji, the Jaintia Hills with Jowai and Krang Suri, and the Garo Hills with Tura and the Nokrek biosphere. Meghalaya (22,429 sq km, population 3.4 million) means "Abode of Clouds" in Sanskrit — the name is accurate: the state occupies a plateau above the Brahmaputra valley and traps the monsoon clouds rising from the Bay of Bengal, producing what is almost certainly the highest average rainfall on earth. Mawsynram (17km from Cherrapunji) holds the Guinness World Record for highest average annual rainfall at 11,871mm/year; Cherrapunji (Sohra) holds the record for highest rainfall in a single calendar month (9,300mm in July 1861) and single calendar year (26,461mm in 1860-61). The combination of ancient rubber fig trees, extreme rainfall, and living in a landscape without flat ground, produced the most remarkable engineering solution in Indian history: the Living Root Bridges. The Khasi people guide the aerial roots of rubber fig trees (Ficus elastica) across river gaps using hollowed betel nut trunks as guides, tying the roots to the far bank and waiting 10–15 years for them to take hold. The resulting bridges, self-reinforcing as the roots grow thicker with age, can hold 50 people simultaneously and some are believed to be 500 years old. The double-decker bridge at Nongriat (accessed via 3,000 steps down from Tyrna village, 13km from Cherrapunji) is the most famous — two bridges at different levels connected by a single living structure — but the single bridge at Riwai village (Mawlynnong, 10-minute walk from the village) is accessible without the difficult trek. Nohkalikai Falls (340m / 1,115ft) is India's tallest plunge waterfall and one of the most dramatic in Asia — a single vertical drop from the 1,300m plateau edge into a plunge pool whose water is stained an unusual shade of green by minerals. Viewable from a cliff-edge platform at Cherrapunji. The local legend of Ka Likai (a woman who leaped from this waterfall after learning her husband had cooked her infant daughter; the waterfall is named after her) is one of the most haunting stories in Indian folklore. Dawki (Tamabil) and the Umngot River: 82km from Shillong, the Umngot River forms the India-Bangladesh border at Dawki. In October–February (post-monsoon, pre-flush), the river is so clear the riverbed is visible in 6–8 metres of water — boats appear to float on air. Glass-bottom boat rides, snorkelling and kayaking are available; the village of Shnongpdeng (3km upstream) has camping on the riverbank with the river literally flowing under the tent floor. Mawlynnong (89km from Shillong, 10km from Dawki) was declared Asia's cleanest village by Discover India magazine in 2003 and 2006 — the Khasi community maintains it through a collective system where each household is responsible for keeping their stretch of road clean, and a 30-foot bamboo skywalk gives views over the tree canopy to the Bangladeshi plains. Laitlum Grand Canyon (26km from Shillong) is a 900m-deep canyon in the East Khasi Hills — the scale is unexpected so close to the capital, and the viewpoint at the canyon rim gives the best panoramic view of the Meghalaya plateau. Don Bosco Museum (Mawlai, Shillong) is a 7-storey centre for the cultures of all eight Northeast Indian states — textiles, tribal artefacts, instruments, costumes, photographs. The skywalk on the top floor gives a 360° view of Shillong and the Khasi Hills.
Getting there: Fly Delhi → Guwahati (GAU): 2 hrs, ₹4,000. From Guwahati airport: private cab to Shillong ₹1,800 (3 hrs), shared taxi ₹300 (3.5 hrs), ASTC bus ₹180 (3.5 hrs). Shillong has its own airport (SHL) with limited Kolkata flights. Best seasons: October–April — dry season, Dawki river clarity at peak October–February, Nohkalikai and other waterfalls reduced but still impressive, roads clear; November–February — cool (10–18°C at Shillong, 8–15°C at Cherrapunji), Dawki best for clarity. May–September — monsoon, waterfalls at absolute peak (Nohkalikai becomes a thundering curtain of white), but Dawki river runs murky from sediment and roads can flood. Root Bridge Trek note: The Nongriat trek (3,000 steps down, 3,000 back up, 4–5 hrs) is not suitable for children under 7 or people with knee issues; the single bridge at Riwai (Mawlynnong) requires a 10-minute flat walk and is family-accessible.
