The British established it as a summer retreat of the Madras Presidency in the 1820s, built the Botanical Garden in 1847, created Ooty Lake (artificial) in 1824, and connected it to the plains in 1908 via the Nilgiri Mountain Railway. The Nilgiri Mountain Railway (NMR, UNESCO World Heritage since 2005) is one of the world's great train journeys: a metre-gauge rack-and-pinion steam railway running 46km from Mettupalayam (326m) to Ooty (2,203m) via Coonoor, climbing 1,877m through 16 tunnels, 250 bridges and a gradient of 1:12.28 on the rack section — the steepest in Asia. The rack-and-pinion mechanism (where a cog on the locomotive meshes with a toothed rail between the standard rails) was designed in 1895 by Riggenbach and is unchanged today. The steam X-class locomotive, manufactured in 1914, still hauls this route. Doddabetta (2,637m) is the highest peak in the Nilgiris and in Tamil Nadu — from its telescope house on the summit, the entire Blue Mountain range spreads out in a 360° panorama that, on clear December–February mornings, is as dramatic as anything in the Himalayas. The Botanical Garden (Government Botanical Garden, 1847) covers 22 hectares at 2,300m and contains over 650 species of trees, plants and shrubs, including a fossilised tree trunk estimated at 20 million years old. The rose collection alone has over 3,000 varieties. Coonoor (1,850m, 19km from Ooty by road or 30 min by toy train) is the quieter, more atmospheric Nilgiri hill station — home to 6 tea estates including Highfield, Thiashola and Chamraj, Sim's Park (1874, botanical garden with rare species), Dolphin's Nose viewpoint (stunning views of Catherine Falls 2,000ft below), and Lamb's Rock (tea garden panoramas). Pykara (20km from Ooty) has a lake, a cascade waterfall and a dam — less visited than the main Ooty sights, genuinely peaceful in the early morning. Mudumalai (67km from Ooty) is one of South India's most important wildlife sanctuaries, with an elephant population, tiger corridors (Mudumalai–Nagarhole–Bandipur forms India's largest tiger reserve complex), gaur, spotted deer, sambar, leopard and Malabar giant squirrel. Jeep safaris depart at 6am and 4pm.

Getting there: By bus from Bangalore: KSRTC Airavath AC sleeper (₹900/person, 5 hrs, overnight departures). By train: Nilgiri Express Chennai Central → Mettupalayam (overnight, 8 hrs), then NMR steam loco Mettupalayam → Ooty (4.5 hrs, ₹40–185 depending on class). By air: fly to Coimbatore (CJB) — connected to Bangalore (45 min), Chennai (1 hr), Delhi (2 hrs), Mumbai (2 hrs) — then bus or taxi to Ooty (3 hrs, 86km). Best seasons: October–June (Ooty is pleasant year-round at 2,240m, with temperatures 5–25°C). April–June — Summer Festival, flower shows, rose exhibitions, maximum tourist energy. October–November — post-monsoon clarity, lush green post-rain Nilgiris. December–February — cool, misty, Doddabetta sometimes foggy but magical, occasional frost. July–September — monsoon; very green, dramatic mist, waterfalls at full force — an underrated romantic season if you don't mind some rain.
