The climate is sharply seasonal — winter (Dec–Mar) brings heavy snowfall, frozen lake surfaces and skiing; spring (Apr–May) brings the cherry and almond blossom and the Tulip Garden; summer (Jun–Aug) is the peak family season at 15–25°C; autumn (Sep–Nov) brings chinar (maple) colour across the valley and the clearest mountain views. Dal Lake is the axis of Srinagar — 1,500+ houseboats ranging from basic to heritage-luxury are moored along its shores, the largest floating market in Asia operates at dawn (vegetables, flowers, lotus), and 70,000 people live on the lake in a self-contained community of floating gardens and interconnected canals. A shikara ride at 6am, before the tourist boats are out, through the lotus beds and past the floating vegetable sellers, is one of the most memorable family travel experiences in India. Mughal Gardens: Srinagar has three Mughal gardens built by successive emperors — Shalimar Bagh (Jehangir, 1619, for Empress Nur Jahan), Nishat Bagh (Asif Khan, 1632, the largest, on the Dal Lake shoreline with views of the Zabarwan Range), and Chashme Shahi (Shah Jahan, 1632, the smallest, at the source of a natural spring above the Dal). All three are UNESCO-listed and best in April–May when the flowers are in bloom. Tulip Garden (Indira Gandhi Memorial Tulip Garden, Zabarwan foothills, Srinagar): Asia's largest tulip garden, 45+ hectares, 1.5 million tulips of 68 varieties, open for approximately 3–4 weeks in late March and April. Entrance is ₹50 per adult, ₹25 per child. The bloom period is weather-dependent; our specialists monitor it annually. Gulmarg (Meadow of Flowers, 2,650m, 56km from Srinagar) is a natural mountain meadow that was one of the British Empire's premier hill stations and is now India's premier ski resort. The Gulmarg Gondola (Phase 1 to Kongdori at 2,630m; Phase 2 to Apharwat Peak at 3,979m — Asia's highest gondola) gives families access to glacier-level snow in 20 minutes from the meadow. The meadow itself, ringed by 4,000m+ peaks and accessible by a short walk from the gondola base, is the most photogenic location in Kashmir for families. In summer: wild flowers, horse riding, golf (Gulmarg Golf Course, 2,650m, the world's second-highest). In winter: skiing (beginners' slopes near the base, advanced skiing on Apharwat), sledding, snowman-building. Pahalgam (Valley of Shepherds, 2,130m, 95km from Srinagar) sits at the confluence of the Aru and Sheshnag rivers — the town is the base for the Amarnath Yatra (July–August) but outside that period is a calm, pine-forested valley town. Betaab Valley (15km, named for the 1983 film shot here), Aru Valley (11km, meadow and mountain views), Baisaran (5km, meadow above the tree line that genuinely resembles a Swiss alpine meadow) and Chandanwari (16km, the start of the Amarnath Trek route) are all accessible by pony or cab. Sonamarg (Meadow of Gold, 2,740m, 87km from Srinagar) is the last stop before the Zojila Pass and Ladakh — a wide valley where the Sindh River runs between glaciated peaks, and the Thajiwas Glacier is accessible by pony (4km round trip). In summer: cold, clear and uncrowded; in winter: inaccessible (Zojila blocked by snow Nov–May).

Getting there: Fly Delhi → Srinagar (SXR): 1.5 hrs from ₹3,000 one-way. All major carriers serve Srinagar. Airport to city: taxi ₹400–600. By road: Jammu–Srinagar National Highway (NH44), 270km, 6–8 hrs — scenic but requires road condition check; the Banihal Tunnel (Qazigund–Banihal, 8.45km) has greatly improved reliability. Best seasons: April–October for sightseeing, trekking and meadow exploration (Gulmarg green June–September); March–April for Tulip Garden and cherry blossom; December–March for snow and skiing at Gulmarg.
