Shimla Honeymoon Packages — The Queen of Hills
Holiday Vibez curates Shimla honeymoon packages spanning the hill station, its satellite resorts and the extended Himachal Pradesh circuit — from the colonial promenade of Mall Road to the snow slopes of Kufri, the royal forests of Chail, the apple orchards of Mashobra, the legendary Wildflower Hall, and the grand Shimla + Manali and Shimla + Spiti combinations. Shimla (2,206m) has been India's most famous hill station since 1864, when Lord Lawrence declared it the Summer Capital of the British Indian Empire — the Viceroy, the Commander-in-Chief, the Governor-General and the entire apparatus of colonial administration relocated here each April, filling the hills with Tudor cottages, Gothic churches, neo-Elizabethan clubhouses and Mughal-revival bungalows that all still stand. Mall Road is Shimla's spine: a 2km car-free promenade running along the ridge between Scandal Point (where a maharaja allegedly eloped with a viceroy's daughter) and Lakkar Bazaar. The Gaiety Theatre (1887, Rudyard Kipling performed here), the Town Hall (1908), the Anglican Christ Church (1857, the second-oldest church in northern India) and the neo-Tudor post office line both sides. Below the ridge, the city plunges away in terraces of colonial bungalows — some converted to heritage hotels, many unchanged since the 1880s. The Kalka–Shimla Railway (96km, 102 tunnels, 864 bridges, UNESCO World Heritage since 2008) remains the most romantic way to arrive — the narrow-gauge toy train climbs 1,420m in 5.5 hours through forests of sal, pine and rhododendron, making 889 curves, the passengers leaning out of the windows for the tunnel entries. Kufri (2,623m, 17km from Shimla) is the snow resort: in winter (November–March) 1–3 metres of snow falls, and the ski slopes are full of beginners in rental equipment; in summer, yak rides and horse treks operate on green meadows with Himalayan panoramas. Chail (2,250m, 45km from Shimla) was built in 1891 by the Maharaja of Patiala after he was banished from Shimla by the British — his revenge was to build a palace at a higher elevation than Shimla, with the world's highest cricket ground (2,444m) and a polo ground, in dense deodar cedar forest. Wildflower Hall (Oberoi, 2,250m, 34km from Shimla) is one of the five greatest luxury mountain hotels in India: the original Wildflower Hall was the summer residence of Lord Kitchener and was rebuilt by the Oberoi group as a 98-room property in 1997, with wood-panelled rooms, an outdoor heated pool with mountain views, a cedar forest spa and a restaurant where the menu changes with the Himalayan seasons.
Getting there: Train Delhi → Kalka: Kalka Shatabdi (12005) departs 7:40am, arrives 11:40am (3.5 hrs, ₹475 AC chair), or overnight Himalayan Queen or New Delhi–Kalka Express (7.5 hrs). Toy Train Kalka → Shimla: rail motor car (5.5 hrs, ₹120) or Himalayan Queen express (4 hrs, ₹380 AC chair). By road from Delhi: 350km, 7–8 hrs via NH44. By air: Shimla Airport (SLV) at Jubbarhatti — very small, only ATR-72 aircraft, limited flights from Delhi (frequently cancelled); Chandigarh Airport (IXC, 110km from Shimla) is the more reliable option. Best seasons: December–February — snowfall, romantic snowbound Shimla, ice skating (Asia's only natural outdoor rink, Shimla Ice Skating Club), Kufri skiing; March–April — spring flowers, rhododendrons; April–June — best weather (18–25°C), long days, all activities open; September–November — post-monsoon clarity, crisp air, Himalayan views at their sharpest.
