Tiger Hill (2,590m, 11km from town) is the single most visited sunrise viewpoint in India: in the pre-dawn dark, hundreds of people gather in the cold to watch the first light of day strike Kanchenjunga (8,586m), turning the snow peak from grey to rose to gold — all before the sun has risen over Darjeeling itself. On clear days, you can see Everest (8,849m), Makalu (8,485m) and Lhotse (8,516m) from Tiger Hill. The Darjeeling Himalayan Railway Toy Train (1881) is India's most beloved heritage railway — the world's only mountain railway still hauled by the original coal-fired steam engines on the commercial line. UNESCO declared it a World Heritage Site in 1999. The 88km narrow-gauge (2-foot) track from New Jalpaiguri winds through 6 zigzags and 5 loops up to Darjeeling — a full journey takes 8 hours; the tourist joy ride from Darjeeling to Ghoom (highest railway station in India at 2,258m) and back takes 2 hours. Darjeeling's tea estates are the most famous in the world: first flush (March–April, light and floral) and second flush (May–June, muscatel character) are among the most expensive teas on earth. Sandakphu Trek (3,636m, the highest point in West Bengal) along the Singalila Ridge is one of India's finest treks: 55km, 4–6 days from Maneybhanjyang, passing through rhododendron forests, Tumling, Tonglu and Phalut — at the summit, you see the "Sleeping Buddha" formed by Kanchenjunga, Yalung Kang, Kabru and Rathong, plus Everest, Makalu and Lhotse on the same horizon.

Getting there: Fly to Bagdogra (IXB) from Kolkata (50 min), Delhi (2.5 hrs) or Bengaluru (2.5 hrs). Bagdogra or NJP to Darjeeling is 72km by shared jeep (3 hrs via the Pankhabari road and Kurseong) or 4 hrs by Toy Train from NJP. Best seasons: October–November — post-monsoon clarity, Tiger Hill views at best, skies crystal clear, Kanchenjunga fully visible. March–May — spring, rhododendron bloom on the Sandakphu ridge (March–April), first flush tea plucking (mid-March to May), warming temperatures. December–February — cool and clear, possible light snow in January–February, Toy Train especially atmospheric in mist.
