Kerala Honeymoon Packages — Why Couples Choose God's Own Country
Holiday Vibez curates Kerala honeymoon packages across the state's five most romantic zones — the backwaters, the hill stations, the beaches, the wildlife retreats and the forest hideaways. Kerala is consistently voted India's #1 domestic honeymoon destination, and with good reason: it is a state where the landscape itself is romantic — a long, thin strip of land between the Western Ghats and the Arabian Sea, laced with 44 rivers and 1,500km of backwater canals, its hills covered in tea and spice gardens. Alleppey (Alappuzha) is the backwater capital: the 1,900km network of canals, rivers, lakes and lagoons around Alleppey is navigated by 1,500+ houseboats, each a floating cottage with a bedroom, sit-out, fully-staffed kitchen and a sundeck — private, slow, romantic, with kingfishers on the canal edges, toddy-tapping coconut farmers overhead, and a sunset that turns the water liquid copper. The best houseboat experience is a full overnight stay: after all tourists have docked at 6pm (government regulation), you are essentially alone on the water. Munnar (1,600m, Idukki district) is India's most beautiful tea country — 66 tea estates covering 30,000 hectares of the Western Ghats in a rolling geometry of emerald terraces. The mist rolls in most mornings from the Pambar River valley, the air smells of crushed tea leaf, and the silence is extraordinary. A hike to Top Station (1,700m) on the Tamil Nadu border gives one of India's great views — the entire Munnar valley below, tea as far as the horizon. Varkala is Kerala's most dramatic beach — not a flat sandy strip but a red laterite cliff 20–50m above the Arabian Sea, with beach huts and restaurants perched on its edge and a long stretch of clean sand below. The water is warmer and clearer than Goa. Thekkady (Periyar Tiger Reserve) offers the most intimate wildlife experience in India — the boat safari on Periyar Lake at dawn, surrounded by elephant herds and wild bison coming to drink. Wayanad is the forest choice: treehouse cottages suspended 30–40 feet above the forest floor, Chembra Peak with its heart-shaped lake, and the pre-historic Edakkal Caves with 6,000-year-old petroglyphs.
Getting there: Fly to Cochin International (COK) from all major cities — 2.5 hrs from Delhi, 1.5 hrs from Mumbai, 45 min from Bengaluru. Alternatively fly to Trivandrum (TRV) for Varkala/Kovalam beach focus. Kochi to Alleppey is 63km (1.5 hrs); to Munnar 130km (4 hrs via Aluva). Best season: October–March — the post-monsoon season, when Kerala is lush and dry, water levels on the backwaters are high, and Munnar is at its most atmospheric. December–January is peak: Alleppey at 28°C, Munnar at 18°C, Varkala at 30°C. April–June — hot but not impossible; Munnar stays cool. July–September — monsoon, the backwaters are at their most dramatic but houseboat trips can be rough; the Wayanad forest blooms spectacularly. Ayurveda is best in monsoon (Karkadakam, July–August).
