When is the best time for a Greek islands honeymoon?
May–June and September–October are ideal. May–June: warm Aegean (22–24°C), all sites open, lower crowds, wildflowers still blooming on the islands. September: warmest sea (25–26°C), golden afternoon light on the caldera, Oia less crowded for the sunset. July–August is peak season — Santorini is extremely crowded (18,000 tourists per day on an island of 15,000 residents), Oia sunset viewpoint requires 3+ hours early arrival, and prices are highest. We strongly recommend September as the single best month for a Santorini honeymoon. The light is extraordinary and the caldera is almost yours again.
Should we go to Santorini first or Athens first?
We build this itinerary as Athens → Santorini → Mykonos for practical and experiential reasons. Athens first: you arrive into the international hub, recover from the long flight in a city (easier logistics), and experience the historical foundation of Greece before the islands. Santorini in the middle: the caldera is at its best mid-trip, and you have time to truly absorb it without the departure anxiety of it being last. Mykonos last: it’s the most glamorous and social island — a perfect, celebratory final chapter before flying home. The ferry progression also flows logically south to north.
What makes Santorini wine so special?
Santorini wine is unique in the world because of its volcanic origin. The vines grow in basket shapes directly on the pumice-ash soil, with no irrigation (the island receives almost no rain). The Assyrtiko grape produces a white wine of extraordinary mineral intensity — dry, high-acid, with a saline quality that comes directly from the volcanic sea air. The same soil that makes Santorini look so dramatic makes its wine taste unlike anything else. Vinsanto — the golden dessert wine made from sun-dried Assyrtiko grapes — has been produced on the island since antiquity. Tasting both in a caldera-view winery at sunset is one of the most sensory honeymoon experiences available.
Is Delos worth the day trip from Mykonos?
Strongly recommended. Delos is one of the most important archaeological sites in the Mediterranean — the mythological birthplace of Apollo and Artemis, and once the most sacred island in the Greek world. 30 minutes by ferry from Mykonos, the island is uninhabited and entirely devoted to archaeology: the Terrace of the Lions (7th century BC marble lions), the House of Dionysus with its famous mosaic, the theatre, and the extraordinary view of the surrounding Cyclades from the summit of Mount Kynthos. Unlike Mykonos (which can feel busy), Delos offers complete serenity. Most of our couples say it was the most unexpectedly moving experience of the Greek trip.

I have been trying to find words for the Santorini sunset for three weeks since returning and I have not found them yet. We arrived at the Oia castle viewpoint 90 minutes early. The light changed every 10 minutes as the sun descended. The caldera turned gold, then amber, then deep rose. The crowd grew and grew. And then the sun touched the caldera rim and the entire crowd became completely silent. No camera sounds. No talking. Just silence and the sound of the Aegean 300m below. And then the sun disappeared and everyone applauded. My wife and I held each other and could not speak. This is why Santorini exists. We had not expected Athens to be a highlight — we thought it was just a transit between the islands. We were completely wrong. Standing on the Acropolis at dawn before it opened to crowds, with the Parthenon lit in gold and the entire city of Athens spread below us and the sea visible on three sides — it is one of the finest views in the world. My wife is an architect and she stood in front of the Parthenon columns for 45 minutes without speaking. The columns have an almost invisible inward lean to make them appear perfectly straight from below — a 2,500-year-old optical illusion. The Acropolis Museum showed us the originals up close. Mykonos’s Little Venice at sunset with a glass of Campari and the windmills silhouetted above us was the perfect Greek farewell. Superb all-round.

Our caldera view room in Santorini — waking up on our third morning as a married couple to find the Aegean caldera shimmering blue through the window, the white village descending the cliff below us, a tray of Greek coffee and loukoumades on the terrace — this is the most perfect thing I have ever experienced. The Akrotiri ruins were extraordinary — a complete Bronze Age city, three thousand six hundred years ago, buried and preserved. Walking through streets where Minoan people walked before the Trojan War. Then the black volcanic beach the same afternoon with the Mediterranean so clear you can see the sand three metres down.
