Bhaktapur is the best-preserved of the Kathmandu Valley's ancient royal cities, a car-free maze of brick-paved lanes, pagoda temples and craftsmen at work. Its UNESCO-listed Durbar Square, the soaring five-storey Nyatapola temple and the sun-dried rows of Pottery Square feel like stepping back several centuries. Indian citizens need no visa for Nepal and travel on a passport or Voter ID. Holiday Vibez includes Bhaktapur as a highlight of any Kathmandu Valley itinerary.

About Bhaktapur

Once an independent kingdom, Bhaktapur retains more of its medieval character than anywhere else in the valley. Traffic is kept out of the core, so you explore on foot amid temples, tiled roofs and artisans still practising centuries-old crafts.

Things to see

Highlights within easy walking distance include:

  • Durbar Square with the Golden Gate and 55-Window Palace
  • The five-storey Nyatapola temple
  • Pottery Square and its working potters
  • Dattatreya Square and the Peacock Window

How to reach Bhaktapur

Bhaktapur is around a 45-minute to one-hour drive east of central Kathmandu, and is easily combined with Nagarkot or Changu Narayan. We arrange private transfers and an expert local guide.

Entry & documents

Indians do not need a visa for Nepal. Enter on a valid passport or Voter ID with no visa fee. A small heritage entry fee applies to the old city and is included in your package.

Best time to visit

October to April offers pleasant, dry days ideal for exploring the squares on foot. Mornings and late afternoons bring lovely light on the brick and timber architecture.

Crafts, food & culture

Bhaktapur is famous for pottery, wood-carving and its creamy juju dhau, the king of curds. Watching potters at their wheels and craftsmen carving lattice windows is part of the town's living heritage.
