Kashmir Travel Guide: Gulmarg, Pahalgam & Srinagar

Often called “Paradise on Earth”, Kashmir delivers snow-capped peaks, mirror-still lakes, houseboats and flower-filled valleys — all without leaving India, and with no passport or visa needed. From a serene shikara glide on Dal Lake to the high meadows of Gulmarg, Kashmir is one of the most beautiful destinations in the country. This guide covers the must-visit places, the best time to go, a suggested itinerary and practical tips.

Srinagar — lakes, gardens & houseboats

Most trips begin in Srinagar. Glide across Dal Lake on a shikara, stay overnight in a traditional carved-wood houseboat, and wander the terraced Mughal Gardens — Nishat, Shalimar and Chashme Shahi. The floating vegetable market at dawn is a magical, only-in-Kashmir sight.

Gulmarg — the meadow of flowers

Gulmarg is the adventure capital. Ride the Gondola — one of the world’s highest cable cars — for sweeping Himalayan views. In winter it transforms into a premier skiing destination, while summer brings green meadows perfect for pony rides and gentle walks.

Pahalgam — the valley of shepherds

A scenic drive leads to Pahalgam, gateway to the lush Betaab and Aru valleys. Surrounded by pine forests and the rushing Lidder River, it’s a favourite for nature lovers, pony treks and riverside picnics.

Sonmarg & beyond

The “Meadow of Gold”, Sonmarg, is the launch point for the Thajiwas Glacier, reachable by a short pony ride. It’s also the gateway to the Ladakh route, with some of the most dramatic mountain scenery in Kashmir.

Best time to visit

March–October is pleasant and green, ideal for sightseeing. December–February is for snow lovers and skiers. The famous Tulip Garden in Srinagar blooms in early April — a spectacular, short-lived show of colour.
