Missing paperwork is the single most common reason a trip abroad goes wrong before it even begins. From a passport that expires too soon to a forgotten return ticket at immigration, small document slips cause big headaches. <strong>This checklist walks through every document an Indian traveller needs</strong> for a smooth overseas holiday, and how to keep them safe.
A valid passport (the foundation)
Your passport is the one document you cannot travel without. Confirm it is valid for at least six months beyond your return date, has at least two blank pages, and is not damaged. If renewal is due, apply well in advance, as processing and appointments take time. Note your passport number somewhere safe in case it is lost.
The correct visa for your destination
Visa rules for Indians vary hugely by country, so check yours as soon as you choose a destination:
- Visa-free or visa-on-arrival: Maldives, Sri Lanka, Thailand (as per current rules)
- e-Visa: Malaysia, Singapore, and many others
- Sticker/embassy visa: Dubai (via approved channels), Schengen Europe

Flight tickets and proof of onward travel
Carry confirmed return or onward flight tickets, both printed and on your phone. Many countries and airlines will not let you board or clear immigration without proof that you plan to leave. Keep your booking references handy in case you need to reschedule.
Hotel bookings and itinerary
Immigration officers often ask where you are staying, so carry your hotel confirmations and a rough day-wise itinerary. For visa applications to places like Schengen Europe, confirmed accommodation and a travel plan are usually mandatory supporting documents.
Travel insurance
Travel insurance covers medical emergencies, hospitalisation, baggage loss and trip cancellation. It is compulsory for a Schengen (Europe) visa and strongly recommended everywhere else. Carry the policy document and the insurer's emergency helpline number with you.
Money proof: forex card and cash
Sort your forex travel card, some foreign cash and a backup international card before you leave. For certain visas you may also need bank statements and salary slips as proof of funds. Keep cards and cash in separate places so losing one does not strand you.
Photos, IDs and supporting papers
Carry a few recent passport-size photographs that meet the destination's specifications, as visas and local permits often need them. It helps to keep copies of your PAN card, and for some applications, your ITR, employment letter or invitation letter. Students and minors may need extra documents such as a No Objection Certificate.
Keep digital and paper backups
Photograph or scan every document and store copies in your email and phone, plus one printed set kept separately from the originals. If a passport or visa is lost abroad, these copies dramatically speed up help from the Indian embassy. This one habit can turn a crisis into a mere inconvenience.
