Patan, also known as Lalitpur or the City of Beauty, is the Kathmandu Valley's traditional centre of arts and craftsmanship. Just across the river from Kathmandu, it boasts a magnificent Durbar Square, the exquisite Golden Temple and streets full of metalworkers, wood-carvers and Newari artisans. Indian citizens need no visa for Nepal and travel on a passport or Voter ID. Holiday Vibez folds Patan into your valley itinerary for a deeper look at Nepal's living heritage.

About Patan

Patan is the oldest of the valley's three royal cities and the heartland of Newari art. Its compact old town rewards slow exploration, with hidden courtyards, Buddhist bahals and a Durbar Square many travellers rate above Kathmandu's own.

What to see

Patan's highlights sit close together:

  • Patan Durbar Square and its temples
  • The gilded Golden Temple
  • The stone Krishna Mandir
  • The award-winning Patan Museum

How to reach Patan

Patan lies just south of central Kathmandu, around a 20 to 30 minute drive across the Bagmati River. It combines naturally with a Kathmandu city tour or a Bhaktapur day. We arrange transfers and a local guide.

Entry & documents

Indians do not need a visa for Nepal. Enter on a valid passport or Voter ID with no visa fee. A modest heritage entry fee applies to Patan Durbar Square and is included in your package.

Best time to visit

October to April brings dry, comfortable days perfect for wandering the squares and courtyards. The soft morning and evening light is especially beautiful on the temple stonework.

Arts, crafts & culture

Patan remains a working craft city, famous for lost-wax metal casting, statues and singing bowls. Visiting artisan workshops is a genuine highlight, and the Newari food and festivals add further colour to any visit.
