About Somarama Temple

Somarama, the Sri Someswara Janardana Swamy temple at Gunupudi in Bhimavaram, is one of the five Pancharama Kshetras of Andhra Pradesh, the group of Shiva shrines pilgrims traditionally complete together along with Draksharama, Kumararama at Samalkot, Ksheerarama at Palakollu and Amararama at Amaravati. The deity is Someswara Swamy in linga form, with Sri Rajarajeswari as his consort; tradition holds that the linga was installed here by Chandra, the moon god, which is where the name Somarama comes from. Its best-known feature is the linga itself, which devotees describe as turning pale white around the full moon and dark towards the new moon. Unusually, a shrine of Goddess Annapurna stands directly above the sanctum on the upper storey, and a lotus tank called Chandrakundam lies in front of the temple. The site is protected as a monument of national importance.

Best time to visit

November to February is the comfortable window — the coastal Godavari delta is hot and sticky from March onwards and wet through the June-September monsoon. Maha Shivaratri (February or March) is the temple's biggest day and Sarannavaratri (September or October) the other main festival; both draw very heavy crowds and long waits, so elders who want an unhurried darshan are better off on an ordinary weekday. Pancharama pilgrims often time the full-moon or new-moon days to see the linga's colour, which fills the temple further.

How to reach

The temple is inside Bhimavaram town, in the Gunupudi area, so the approach is easy. Bhimavaram is on the rail network with stations in the town itself (Bhimavaram Town and Bhimavaram Junction), both a short auto ride away, with trains from Vijayawada, Rajahmundry and Visakhapatnam. The nearest airports are Rajahmundry, roughly 105 km, and Vijayawada (Gannavaram), roughly 115-120 km, each about two and a half to three hours by road. By road Bhimavaram is well connected by APSRTC and private buses from Vijayawada, Rajahmundry, Eluru and Narsapur, and the temple has road access right up to it — no climb and no walk of any length.

The Annapurna shrine sits on the upper storey above the sanctum and is reached by a flight of steps, which some elderly visitors find difficult; the main Shiva sanctum below is on level ground. Traditional dress is expected, and men are customarily asked to remove shirts in the inner sanctum, as at most Shaiva temples in coastal Andhra. Timings and special pooja arrangements should be confirmed with the temple office before you travel.

What we arrange
  • Stays near the shrine — so elders aren't driven back and forth at 4am.
  • Private transfers — pick-up from your door, not a meeting point.
  • Meals that suit the group — including pure-veg and fasting requirements.
  • Group travel — 4 people or 40, one coordinator, one itinerary.
  • Someone on the phone — when you're in a queue three states from home.
What we don't do: sell you darshan.

Temple boards run their own darshan queues and quotas. No travel agent can sell you a special one, and agencies that promise "VIP darshan" are either misleading you or breaking the trust's rules. We help you book the official slots and we get everything else right.

Travelling with elders?

Most of the people we send on yatra are over 55, or booking for parents who are. We plan shorter driving days, stays within walking distance where the shrine allows it, and we'll tell you honestly if a site involves a long climb or a trek before you pay — not after.

Somarama Temple — common questions
Is Somarama one of the Pancharama Kshetras, and can all five be done in one trip?

Yes, Somarama at Bhimavaram is one of the five Pancharamas. Many pilgrims cover all five — Bhimavaram, Palakollu, Draksharamam, Samalkot and Amaravati — over two to three days by road, since the first four lie fairly close together in the Godavari districts and Amaravati is the outlier near Vijayawada.

Does the Shiva linga really change colour?

Devotees and temple tradition hold that the linga appears whitish around the full moon and darker towards the new moon, which is tied to the belief that Chandra, the moon god, installed it. It is described as a devotional observation rather than something the temple presents as a scientific claim.

Is there a climb or a lot of walking?

No. The temple is in the middle of Bhimavaram town with road access up to it and the main sanctum on level ground. The only steps are the flight up to the Annapurna shrine above the sanctum, which can be skipped if walking is difficult.
