Ahobilam is a group of shrines in the Nallamala hills of Andhra Pradesh dedicated to Narasimha, the man-lion avatar of Vishnu, and it is counted among the 108 Divya Desams — sung in the Tamil hymns of Thirumangai Alvar in the 9th century. What makes it unusual is that it is not one temple but nine: nine separate Narasimha shrines, among them Ahobila, Jwala, Malola, Bhargava, Yogananda, Karanja, Chatravata, Pavana and Varaha (Kroda) Narasimha, spread across Lower Ahobilam on the plain and Upper Ahobilam about 8 km inside the forest. Lower Ahobilam's Prahlada Varada temple carries substantial Vijayanagara-era work, and the site was patronised by the Tuluva rulers, Krishnadevaraya among them. Tradition holds that Narasimha emerged here from a pillar to slay Hiranyakashipu, and pilgrims climb to the rock cleft known as Ugra Sthambham, high above Upper Ahobilam, as the spot of that appearance.
October to February is the comfortable window — the forest is green after the monsoon and the walking is bearable; summer here runs very hot, above 40°C in April and May, which is hard on elders and on anyone attempting the upper shrines. The ten-day annual Brahmotsavam falls in the month of Phalguna (mid-February to mid-March) and draws large crowds, so come then for the festival atmosphere but expect long waits and full lodging. Narasimha Jayanti in Vaisakha (April–May) is also busy, and falls in the hottest part of the year.
The nearest major airport is Rajiv Gandhi International, Hyderabad, roughly 330 km away; Kurnool's Orvakal airport is closer but has few flights, so most families fly to Hyderabad and drive. The nearest railhead is Nandyal, on the Guntakal–Guntur line with trains from Hyderabad, Bengaluru, Chennai and Vizag; road distance from Nandyal is usually given as around 65–70 km via Allagadda, which is the nearest town, about 25 km from Ahobilam. Buses run from Hyderabad, Kurnool, Kadapa and Tirupati to Allagadda, with local buses and taxis onward; Kurnool town itself is roughly 150 km away.
Ahobilam is a walking pilgrimage, not a drive-up one. Lower Ahobilam and a few shrines are reachable by road, but Upper Ahobilam lies 8 km further into the Nallamala forest, and several of the nine shrines — Jwala, Malola, Varaha and the Ugra Sthambham above them — need steep, rocky forest treks of a few kilometres each, over streams and unmade paths. Covering all nine typically takes two days and a local guide, and the higher stretches are not advisable for elders, small children or anyone with knee or heart trouble; many families do the accessible shrines only, which is an accepted way to make the yatra. Carry water and sturdy shoes, and confirm shrine timings and forest-path conditions with the temple before you travel, as the upper routes can be affected by rain.

Do I have to trek to see all nine Narasimha temples at Ahobilam?
Yes. Only some shrines at Lower Ahobilam and the main Upper Ahobilam temple are approachable by vehicle; the rest involve forest walks of one to several kilometres over rocky ground, and Ugra Sthambham is the hardest of them. Pilgrims who cannot climb usually visit Lower Ahobilam and whichever upper shrines they can manage.
How many days should we keep for Ahobilam?
One day is enough for Lower Ahobilam and a short visit to the main upper temple. If you want all nine shrines, keep two days and start early on both, ideally with a local guide, since parts of the route pass through the Nallamala forest.
Is Ahobilam a Divya Desam?
Yes, Ahobilam is one of the 108 Divya Desams, praised in the Tamil hymns of Thirumangai Alvar. It is also the seat of the Ahobila Mutt, a Sri Vaishnava monastic institution traced to around the late 15th or early 16th century.
