Srikalahasti Temple, on the bank of the Swarnamukhi river at the foot of the Nallamala foothills in Andhra Pradesh's Tirupati district, is dedicated to Shiva as Srikalahasteeswara. It is counted among the Pancha Bhuta Sthalams, the five shrines representing the elements, and stands for Vayu, wind — the white stone lingam here is never touched by the priest's hand, and the lamp in the sanctum is seen to flicker even with no draught. The temple's name is traced to three devotees of tradition — Sri the spider, Kala the serpent and Hasti the elephant — and it is also remembered as the place of Kannappa Nayanar, the hunter-saint of the Tamil Saiva canon; it is a Paadal Petra Sthalam, sung in those early hymns. Rock-cut work at the site is dated to the 5th century CE with major building under the Cholas in the 11th century and the Vijayanagara rulers after, Krishnadevaraya's tall gopuram and hundred-pillared hall among them, and the temple is best known today for its Rahu–Ketu shanti puja, which draws pilgrims from across South India.
October to February is the comfortable window — Srikalahasti sits in a hot, dry inland belt and April to June is genuinely punishing for elders. Maha Shivaratri, falling in February or March, is the temple's biggest festival and brings lakhs of devotees over several days; the darshan is memorable but the crowd is very heavy, so families travelling with older parents or small children may prefer an ordinary weekday just before or after it.
The nearest airport is Tirupati (Renigunta), roughly 25 km away, with flights from Hyderabad, Bengaluru, Chennai and Delhi. Srikalahasti has its own railway station on the Renigunta–Gudur line, about 3 km from the temple, and Renigunta junction, around 25 km away, is the bigger railhead with more long-distance trains. By road the temple is about 36 km from Tirupati on a good highway, an hour or so by taxi or APSRTC bus, which is why most families combine it with a Tirumala trip.
The Rahu–Ketu shanti puja that most visitors come for is arranged only through the temple's own counters and its official booking system — no travel agent, ours included, can book, reserve or move up a puja or a darshan slot here. Puja slots, ticket categories and timings are set by the temple administration and do change, so confirm directly with the temple before you fix your travel dates. One unusual point in the temple's favour: unlike most Hindu shrines, it stays open during solar and lunar eclipses.

Can we visit Srikalahasti and Tirupati on the same trip?
Yes, and most pilgrims do. The temple is about 36 km from Tirupati, roughly an hour by road, so it is commonly done as a half-day trip on either side of a Tirumala darshan. Plan them on separate days if you want to be unhurried, since Tirumala itself can take most of a day.
Why do people come here specifically for Rahu-Ketu puja?
Srikalahasti is traditionally regarded as the principal shrine for Rahu-Ketu shanti, performed to relieve doshas associated with those planetary positions in a horoscope. The puja is conducted at the temple through its own counters and official booking channels. We can plan your travel and stay around it, but the puja slot itself is entirely the temple's to give — confirm arrangements with the temple before booking travel.
Is there a climb or a lot of steps for elderly pilgrims?
The main temple sits at ground level beside the Swarnamukhi river, so there is no hill climb to reach it, unlike Tirumala. There is walking within the temple complex and some stepped sections, and the smaller hill shrines above the temple do involve a climb, which older visitors can simply skip.
