Simhachalam is the hilltop shrine of Sri Varaha Lakshmi Narasimha Swamy, a composite form of Vishnu described as having the face of the boar (Varaha), a human body and the tail of a lion — a combination found almost nowhere else in India. Its single most distinctive feature is that the moolavirat is kept encased in a thick coat of sandalwood paste for the whole year, so what pilgrims usually see is a smooth, roughly four-foot lingam-like shape rather than the carved figure. The temple as it stands was built in the 13th century under the Eastern Ganga king Narasingha Deva I and consecrated by his son Bhanudeva I, and its architecture blends Eastern Ganga, Eastern Chalukya and Chola elements; unusually for a Vishnu temple, it faces west. Around 500 inscriptions on its walls record grants from rulers and ordinary citizens across several centuries, and families across coastal Andhra come here for the first tonsure, weddings and thanksgiving vows.
October to February is the easiest stretch — the coastal heat and humidity ease off and the hill climb is bearable for elders. The one festival that defines Simhachalam is Chandanotsavam on Akshaya Tritiya (April or May), when the sandalwood coat is removed and the deity's original form, Nijaroopa Darshanam, is visible for only about twelve hours in the entire year; it is extremely crowded, with lakhs of pilgrims and long overnight waits, and is not an easy day for elderly or very young travellers. If you want the true form, come then and plan for the crowd; if you want a calm darshan, come in winter instead.
Simhachalam hill sits roughly 16 km north of Visakhapatnam city. Visakhapatnam International Airport is about 20–25 km away, and Visakhapatnam Junction railway station about 16–18 km, with Simhachalam North a smaller halt closer to the foothill. City buses (APSRTC routes from Dwaraka Bus Station and other points), autos and taxis run to the foothill all day; from there a motorable ghat road climbs to the temple, and the Devasthanam operates its own shuttle buses up and down the hill.
Two things to plan for. First, the traditional approach is a flight of about a thousand steps from the foot of the hill — elders and anyone with knee or heart trouble should use the ghat road by car or the temple shuttle instead. Second, on every day except Chandanotsavam the deity is fully covered in sandalwood paste, so you will see the sandalwood form rather than the carved Varaha-Narasimha image; if seeing the original form matters to you, that is a once-a-year occasion. Traditional dress is expected, and darshan timings, seva bookings and any festival-day arrangements should be confirmed directly with the temple Devasthanam before you travel.

Can I see the actual idol of Varaha Lakshmi Narasimha Swamy on a normal day?
No. The idol stays covered in sandalwood paste through the year and looks like a smooth lingam-shaped form. The paste is removed only on Chandanotsavam day, on Akshaya Tritiya in April or May, when the original form is visible for about twelve hours. On every other day you have darshan of the sandalwood-covered deity.
Do we have to climb the steps, or is there a road to the top?
There is a proper ghat road to the hilltop, so cars, taxis and the temple's own shuttle buses can take you up. The thousand-step footpath is a devotional choice, not a requirement. Families travelling with elders normally go up by road.
Can a travel agent arrange a faster or special darshan for us?
No. The queues and any special-entry arrangements are run entirely by the Simhachalam Devasthanam, and no agent can obtain, reserve or speed up darshan.
