The Kanaka Durga temple stands on Indrakeeladri hill above the Krishna river in Vijayawada, and is dedicated to Kanaka Durga, the goddess shown with eight arms standing over the demon Mahishasura. The idol is traditionally held to be swayambhu, self-manifested rather than installed, and the shrine of Malleswara Swamy (Shiva) shares the same hill complex, so pilgrims usually take darshan of both. The hill has a long recorded history: a Telugu inscription of 1229 CE mentions a donation to Malleswaradeva at Indrakiladri. Tradition holds that Arjuna performed penance here and received the Pasupata astra from Shiva, and that the hill became the goddess's permanent seat at the request of the sage Indrakila.
October to February is the comfortable window; Vijayawada summers from March to June are severe and the climb is hard on elders in that heat. Dasara/Navaratri (September–October) is the temple's biggest festival, when the goddess is dressed in a different form on each of the nine days — it is also punishingly crowded, with lakhs of pilgrims and queues that run for hours, so families travelling with elderly members may prefer the weeks just before or after. The conclusion of Bhavani Deeksha around November–December also draws very heavy crowds.
Vijayawada (Gannavaram) airport is roughly 20–22 km from the hill, about an hour by road depending on traffic. Vijayawada Junction, one of South India's busiest railheads with direct trains from Chennai, Hyderabad, Bengaluru and Delhi, is only about 3–4 km away, and the Pandit Nehru bus station is a similar distance. City buses, autos and taxis run frequently to the foot of the hill; a ghat road for vehicles exists but has been closed for repairs at times, so check the current access arrangement before you set out.
The shrine is on a hilltop reached by a long flight of roughly 400 steps. A lift is available, but its use is restricted to senior citizens, differently-abled persons and mothers carrying infants. If an elder in your group cannot manage steps, confirm the lift and vehicle-access arrangement with the temple before you travel, as the ghat road is periodically closed for repair work.

How many steps are there to Kanaka Durga temple, and is there an easier way up?
There is a stepped path of about 400 steps from the base to the shrine. A lift serves senior citizens, differently-abled pilgrims and mothers with infants, and a ghat road for vehicles exists but is closed for repairs from time to time. Confirm the current arrangement with the temple before your trip.
Can a travel agent arrange special or quicker darshan for us?
No. The Sri Durga Malleswara Swamy Varla Devasthanam runs its own darshan queues and arrangements directly, and no tour operator can obtain, reserve or speed up darshan. Is Dasara a good time to bring elderly parents?
Dasara is the most meaningful time to visit, but also by far the most crowded, with very long waits and dense crowds on the hill. If your parents cannot stand for long stretches, a visit outside the festival season is far more comfortable, and the daily worship is the same.
Is there anything else on the hill worth seeing?
Yes. The Malleswara Swamy (Shiva) shrine is in the same complex and most pilgrims visit both. The hill also overlooks the Krishna river, and many devotees take a dip in the river as part of the visit.
