Mangalagiri, near Vijayawada in Andhra Pradesh, is a Vishnu hill-shrine counted among the eight great Narasimha kshetras of the region. There are really two temples here: Sri Lakshmi Narasimha Swamy at the foot of the hill, whose eleven-storey gopuram of about 153 feet was raised in the early 19th century by Raja Vasireddy Venkatadri Nayudu of Amaravati, and Sri Panakala Lakshmi Narasimha Swamy part-way up the hill. The Panakala shrine has no conventional idol — the swayambhu deity is worshipped as an open mouth behind a metal face, into which priests pour panakam, jaggery water. Devotees come chiefly for this: tradition holds that the Lord accepts only half of whatever panakam is poured, and the rest returns as prasadam. Vijayanagara inscriptions at the site record royal patronage, including a visit by Krishnadevaraya.
November to February is the comfortable window — the coastal Andhra plain is dry and mild, and the climb is bearable. The eleven-day Brahmotsavam usually falls in February or March and is the biggest draw of the year; the town and the hill path get very crowded then, and elders may find it hard going. March to June is genuinely hot here and best avoided for a midday climb.
The nearest airport is Vijayawada International at Gannavaram, roughly 35-40 km away. Mangalagiri has its own railway halt in the town; the main railhead is Vijayawada Junction, about 12-20 km depending on the approach, and Guntur Junction is around 20-25 km on the other side. NH16 (the Chennai-Kolkata highway) runs through Mangalagiri, so buses, autos and cabs from both Vijayawada and Guntur are frequent and the road drive takes well under an hour.
The Panakala Narasimha shrine is part-way up the hill and is reached by a flight of several hundred steps; there is also a motorable ghat road for those who cannot climb. By long-standing custom the hill shrine is open only in the earlier part of the day and closes by afternoon, unlike the temple at the foot of the hill — so plan a morning visit, and confirm current timings with the temple before you travel. Traditional dress is expected, as at any Andhra temple.

Why is only jaggery water offered here, and is it true the deity drinks only half?
The deity at the hill shrine is worshipped as an open mouth rather than a full idol, and panakam (jaggery dissolved in water) is the prescribed offering for this age in temple tradition. Devotees and priests describe that only about half of whatever is poured is taken in, with the rest flowing back and given out as prasadam. Whether you read it as a wonder or as the shape of the rock, it is the reason most pilgrims come.
Do I have to climb the steps, or can elders reach the hill temple by vehicle?
There is a motorable road up to the hill shrine as well as a stepped path of several hundred steps. Elderly pilgrims and families with small children normally go by vehicle and walk only the last short stretch. Do the hill shrine first in the morning, then the big gopuram temple at the base.
Can we cover Mangalagiri along with Vijayawada in one day?
Yes. Mangalagiri sits on NH16 between Vijayawada and Guntur, under an hour by road from either, so it pairs easily with Kanaka Durga temple at Vijayawada or with Amaravati. Start early, because the hill shrine shuts by afternoon while the temple at the foot reopens in the evening. Timings are set by the temple board — confirm them before you travel.
