The Veerabhadra Temple at Lepakshi is dedicated to Veerabhadra, the fierce warrior form of Shiva, and was built around 1530–1540 CE by the brothers Virupanna and Viranna, governors under Achyuta Deva Raya of the Vijayanagara Empire. It is one of the finest surviving examples of Vijayanagara temple art and is a centrally protected monument of national importance, best known for its painted ceilings — the mural over the ardha mantapa, worked in vegetable and mineral pigments, is among the largest such ceiling paintings in Asia. Its single most talked-about feature is the "hanging pillar", a granite column that rests barely on the floor, with a gap wide enough to pass a cloth beneath. Also on the site are a seven-hooded Naga sheltering a linga, an unfinished kalyana mantapa left mid-carving, and a large monolithic Nandi carved from a single boulder about 200 metres from the temple; tradition holds that the village takes its name from Rama's words "le pakshi" (rise, bird) to the wounded Jatayu.
October to March is the comfortable window, when daytime temperatures are mild and the open stone courtyards are bearable to walk; March to June is genuinely hot on this plateau and hard on elders. Maha Shivaratri, usually in February or March, is the temple's biggest occasion and is accompanied by the Lepakshi Utsavam cultural festival — the site is at its liveliest then, and also at its most crowded, so families travelling with elderly members may prefer an ordinary weekday. Festival dates shift with the Hindu calendar; confirm with the temple before you travel.
The usual air gateway is Kempegowda International Airport, Bengaluru, roughly 100 km away by road; Sri Sathya Sai Airport at Puttaparthi is closer at about 55–60 km but has far fewer flights. The nearest railhead is Hindupur, about 13–15 km from the village, well served by trains on the Bengaluru–Guntakal line, with autos and taxis available for the last stretch. By road, Lepakshi lies roughly 120–125 km north of Bengaluru, a short detour off the NH-44 Bengaluru–Hyderabad highway, making it an easy day trip by car from Bengaluru.
Footwear comes off at the entrance and much of the complex is open granite paving in full sun, which gets very hot from late morning onwards — this is the main difficulty for elders and small children, so plan an early-morning or late-afternoon visit and carry socks. The monolithic Nandi stands about 200 metres away from the main temple and needs a separate short walk or a vehicle hop. Photography rules and any restrictions inside the sanctum are set by the temple and the Archaeological Survey of India; check on arrival.

How much time should we keep for Lepakshi temple?
Most visitors spend about one and a half to two hours at the main temple, plus a short stop at the monolithic Nandi nearby. If you want to look properly at the ceiling murals and the carved pillars of the kalyana mantapa, allow closer to three hours.
Can Lepakshi be done as a day trip from Bengaluru?
Yes. It is roughly 120–125 km by road off NH-44, about two to three hours each way depending on traffic leaving the city. Many families leave Bengaluru early, spend the morning at the temple and return the same evening.
Is the hanging pillar really hanging?
The pillar rests only very slightly on the floor and a thin cloth can usually be passed under one side of its base. It is widely believed to have been dislodged from its original seating during the colonial period when someone tried to work out how it stood. Temple staff discourage rough handling of it.
Is the temple suitable for elderly visitors?
Largely yes — the temple sits on a low rocky outcrop with a modest set of steps rather than a long climb, and the interior is level. The real strain is walking barefoot on hot open stone, so time the visit for early morning or late afternoon.
