The Sri Lakshmi Chennakesava Swamy temple at Markapur, on the Gundlakamma river in Andhra Pradesh's Markapuram (formerly Prakasam) district, enshrines Vishnu as Chennakesava with Goddess Lakshmi beside him in the sanctum. It is a Vijayanagara-period temple: its walls carry eighteen old inscriptions, the earliest work is dated to the first half of the fifteenth century, and upper storeys were added much later in 1837. Its most visible feature is the gopuram, about 135 feet tall and seen from well outside the town, along with a pillared mandapa and a kalyana mantapa whose stone pillars are said to sound musical notes when struck. Tradition holds that Vishnu killed the demon Kesi at this spot, which is how the deity is named Kesava; the temple is also known for a winter alignment in which the morning sun enters through the gopuram and reaches the deity's feet for a short while each day.
November to February is the comfortable stretch — Markapur sits at the edge of the Nallamala country and summers from March to May are severe, which matters if elders are travelling. The temple's big draw is the annual Brahmotsavam and its Rathotsavam (chariot festival), held in the March–April window over several days; press reports have put crowds at over a lakh on chariot day, so it is genuinely packed and slow-moving, and families with small children or elderly members may prefer a quieter week either side. Exact festival dates shift with the Telugu calendar each year — confirm with the temple before you book.
By train, Markapur Road (station code MRK) on the Vijayawada–Guntakal line is the town's own railhead, roughly 4 km from the temple by auto. By road, Markapur is about 95 km from Ongole and is well served by APSRTC buses from Ongole, Kurnool (around 100 km west) and Guntur, with extra services run during the Brahmotsavam. The nearest usable airports are Vijayawada (Gannavaram), around 225 km, and Hyderabad, around 270 km; most pilgrims drive or take the train from there.

Is Markapur Chennakesava temple worth adding to a Srisailam trip?
Yes, it fits naturally. Markapur lies on the eastern approach to the Nallamala hills and many families break the Ongole–Srisailam drive here for darshan. Allow an hour or so at the temple, more on festival days when the town streets are closed for processions.
When can we see the sun's rays falling on the deity's feet?
The alignment happens in the winter weeks, around December and into January, for a short spell each morning. Sources differ on the exact dates and duration, so if you are travelling specifically for it, phone the temple office and confirm the days before you fix your journey.
Is there a dress code or any climb to reach the shrine?
There is no hill climb and no trek — the temple stands within Markapur town on level ground, so it suits elderly pilgrims. Traditional modest dress is expected as at any Andhra Vishnu temple. Darshan timings and any festival-day changes should be confirmed with the temple before you travel.
