The Amareswara (Amaralingeswara) temple at Amaravati enshrines Shiva as Amareswara, worshipped alongside his consort Bala Chamundika, on the southern bank of the Krishna river. It is one of the five Pancharama Kshetras, the group of Shiva shrines of coastal Andhra, and the only one of the five that stands on the Krishna rather than in the Godavari belt — tradition holds that the five arose where pieces of a single Shivalinga fell after Kumaraswamy slew the demon Tarakasura. Its most distinctive feature is the linga itself: a pale, roughly 15-foot shaft, the tallest of the five Pancharama lingas, so tall that priests perform the abhishekam from a raised platform beside it. Epigraphic evidence places the shrine in the 11th century, with its earliest known inscription dated 1129 CE; later rulers added to it, and the zamindar Vasireddy Venkatadri Nayudu carried out major renovation in the late 18th century.
November to February is the comfortable window — the Krishna delta is hot and humid from March to June, and elders in particular will find those months hard. Maha Shivaratri (February or March) is the great festival here and the temple and the riverfront are extremely crowded, with long queues through the day and night; Navaratri is the other busy season. If you want a quiet darshan, come on an ordinary weekday in the cool months rather than on a festival date.
The nearest airport is Vijayawada (Gannavaram), on the far side of Vijayawada city from the temple. Guntur Junction is the practical railhead, about 32-35 km away and well connected to Chennai, Hyderabad and Vijayawada; Vijayawada Junction, about 46 km away, is the bigger station with more long-distance trains. The road approach is straightforward — APSRTC runs daily buses to Amaravati from Guntur, Vijayawada and Mangalagiri, and a hired car from either city is an easy hour or so. Most families travelling with elders find it simplest to base themselves in Vijayawada or Guntur and make Amaravati a half-day trip.
The linga stands about 15 feet tall and the sanctum is approached on foot within the temple complex; visitors who cannot stand for long should plan a short visit. Dress modestly as at any Andhra Shiva temple. Ritual sevas and timings are set by the temple administration and change with festival days — confirm with the temple before you travel.

Is Amaravati Amareswara temple one of the Pancharama Kshetras?
Yes. It is Amararama, one of the five Pancharama Kshetras of Shiva in coastal Andhra, along with Draksharama, Kumararama (Kotipalli), Bhimarama (Samalkot) and Ksheerarama (Palakollu). It is the only one of the five on the Krishna river; the other four lie in the Godavari region. Many pilgrims cover all five in a single circuit.
How far is the temple from Vijayawada and Guntur?
Roughly 46 km from Vijayawada and about 32-35 km from Guntur, both on good roads. APSRTC buses run daily from both cities, and taxis are readily available. Guntur Junction is the closest useful railhead.
Can a travel agent arrange a special or quick darshan?
No. Darshan queues, sevas and any paid tickets are handled entirely by the temple administration under the Andhra Pradesh Endowments Department, and no agent can obtain, reserve or speed up entry. We can arrange your travel, transfers and stay, but you will join the same queue as every other pilgrim. Check timings and seva availability with the temple before you travel, especially around Maha Shivaratri.
