Muktinath is one of the Himalaya's most revered pilgrimage sites, a shrine at around 3,800 metres in the remote Mustang region, holy to both Hindus and Buddhists. Pilgrims come to bathe under its 108 water spouts, visit the temple of Vishnu and the ever-burning natural flame, and seek moksha in a landscape of stark, arid mountains. This is a high-altitude journey that requires reasonable fitness and time to acclimatise. Indian citizens need no visa for Nepal and travel on a passport or Voter ID. Muktinath, meaning place of liberation, is one of the 108 Divya Desam shrines of Vishnu and equally sacred to Buddhists, who know it as Chumig Gyatsa. Its remote Himalayan setting in Mustang gives the pilgrimage a genuine sense of journey and achievement.
Muktinath sits at around 3,800 metres, where the air is thin and altitude sickness is a real risk. We build in gradual ascent and rest, but the trip suits travellers in reasonable health. Those with heart or breathing conditions should consult a doctor first, and everyone should be prepared for cold, wind and basic mountain facilities.
The journey runs from Pokhara into Mustang, either by a scenic mountain flight to Jomsom or by road, followed by a further drive or short trek to the shrine. Mountain flights and roads are weather-dependent and can be delayed, so we build in buffer time.
Indians do not need a visa for Nepal. Enter on a valid passport or Voter ID with no visa fee. The lower Mustang route to Muktinath does not require the restricted-area permit needed for Upper Mustang, and any applicable local permits are arranged in your package.
March to April and October to November are the most reliable, with clearer skies and open roads. Winter brings snow and possible closures, while the monsoon can trigger landslides and flight cancellations on the mountain routes.
