Minicoy Island Tour: Lakshadweep's Deep South
The crescent isle where Mahl is spoken, dhonis race and a lighthouse crowns the reef
Set at the far southern tip of the archipelago, Minicoy feels like a world of its own — a long, crescent-shaped island where the Maldivian-influenced Mahl language is spoken and colourful ceremonial dhoni boats are a point of village pride. Wrapped by one of Lakshadweep's largest lagoons, it is famed for its tuna-fishing heritage, breezy coconut groves and a tall old lighthouse you can climb for a sweeping view. Because it lies so far south, Minicoy is reached mainly by ship on a package cruise rather than a quick flight. It rewards travellers who want culture, quiet beaches and a genuinely off-the-map island.

Suggested itinerary
Board the ship at Kochi and settle in for the long overnight passage across the Arabian Sea towards the southern islands. Deck views, meals and sea air set the tone.
Reach Minicoy and transfer ashore by boat into the great lagoon. Ease into island time with a first walk beneath the coconut palms.
Climb the lighthouse for its famous view, then spend the afternoon snorkelling or swimming in the sheltered lagoon and watching a dhoni row past.
Meet the Mahl-speaking community, learn about tuna fishing and the racing dhonis, and browse local crafts before a sunset by the reef.
Sail back towards Kochi, watching the crescent island slip below the horizon as the ship turns for the mainland.

How to reach Minicoy
Minicoy sits at the southern end of Lakshadweep, far from the Agatti airport, so it is reached mainly by ship from Kochi on a package cruise or government passenger vessel — roughly 14–20 hours of sailing each way. Air travellers first fly Kochi (COK) to Agatti (AGX), but onward island transfers to Minicoy are long and weather-dependent. For most visitors, a Kochi departure by sea is the practical way in.
Entry permit — we assist
Every visitor to Lakshadweep needs a mandatory entry permit, and Minicoy is no exception. Holiday Vibez helps arrange your permit as part of the package, subject to government approval — please apply about 15–30 days ahead with ID proof, passport photos and a police clearance certificate. We cannot guarantee or fast-track approval, so book with time to spare.
Best time to visit
Plan Minicoy between October and May, when the sea is calm, the lagoon is clear and the crossing is comfortable; December to April is peak season. During the June–September monsoon the Arabian Sea turns rough and many ship and boat services are suspended, making the far-south islands hard to reach.
Culture, language & food
Minicoy's Maldivian-leaning identity sets it apart from the rest of Lakshadweep — you'll hear Mahl rather than Malayalam or Jeseri, and see it reflected in dress, dance and cuisine. Tuna features heavily in local meals; expect simple, fresh island cooking rather than elaborate hotel dining.
Where you'll stay
Accommodation across Lakshadweep is modest by design — think simple government cottages or the cabins of your cruise ship rather than large luxury resorts. Islands are eco-sensitive and largely dry (alcohol is only permitted on Bangaram), so pack for a low-key, back-to-nature stay.
Travel tips
Carry enough cash, as card machines and ATMs are limited, and keep an Indian mobile SIM handy — BSNL/postpaid connections work best out here. Currency is INR throughout. Respect the fragile reef, take your litter with you, and build a buffer day into your plans in case sea conditions delay a transfer.

Real stories from real journeys
Thousands of families and couples across South India have travelled with us — here's what a few of them had to say.
Travelling with my parents and two kids, I was nervous. Holiday Vibez planned every single day perfectly, and the Alleppey houseboat was the highlight. We are already planning our next trip with them.
Best price I found anywhere, and the desert safari and Burj Khalifa tickets were all sorted before we even landed. The team was on WhatsApp whenever I had a question.
The Gulmarg gondola, the shikara ride on Dal Lake — exactly like the photos, no surprises at all. By the end of the trip our driver felt like family.
Booked a fairly last-minute Phuket trip and they still got me a great deal with visa help included. Honest, smooth and genuinely helpful people.
Scuba at Havelock was a dream come true. Every transfer and every hotel was exactly as promised. Worth every rupee, and I have already recommended them to friends.
