Lumbini, in Nepal's southern Terai plains, is one of the most sacred sites in the Buddhist world — the place where Siddhartha Gautama, the Buddha, was born. This UNESCO World Heritage Site centres on the Maya Devi temple and marker stone, surrounded by a vast, peaceful monastic zone where nations have built their own monasteries. Indian citizens need no visa for Nepal and can travel on a passport or Voter ID. Holiday Vibez arranges reflective, well-guided visits for pilgrims and culture lovers alike.

About Lumbini

Lumbini is one of the four great pilgrimage sites of Buddhism, alongside Bodh Gaya, Sarnath and Kushinagar. The tranquil monastic zone, laid out to a master plan, invites slow, contemplative walking between temples of many architectural traditions.

What to see

The core of a Lumbini visit includes:

  • The Maya Devi temple and birth-marker stone
  • The sacred Puskarini pond and Bodhi tree
  • The Ashoka Pillar
  • Monasteries built by Thailand, Myanmar, China, Germany and more

How to reach Lumbini

Lumbini sits in the southern Terai, close to the Indian border. It is reachable by road from Chitwan or Pokhara, or via a short domestic flight to Bhairahawa (Gautam Buddha Airport). We plan the smoothest combination for your route.

Entry & documents

Indians do not need a visa for Nepal. Enter on a valid Indian passport or Voter ID with no visa fee. Modest dress is appreciated at this sacred site, and shoes are removed at the Maya Devi temple.

Best time to visit

October to March is the most comfortable, with cool, dry weather across the Terai plains. Summers before the monsoon can be very hot, so early-morning visits are best in warmer months.

Pilgrimage & culture

Lumbini is a living pilgrimage site where monks, nuns and travellers from across Asia gather. Visitors often combine it with Indian Buddhist circuits, and the peaceful atmosphere makes it rewarding for anyone, faith or not.
