Gulmarg delivers big mountain scenery with minimal effort — a short drive from Srinagar takes you into true alpine country. The gondola opens up snowfields and summit views that would otherwise take days of trekking, making it wonderful for families and casual travellers alike. It is a domestic destination, so Indian travellers need no visa or permit.
The cable car runs in two phases: the first to Kongdoori and the second, higher stage towards Apharwat Peak. Snow lingers near the top even in the warmer months, so many first-time visitors see snow here for the very first time.
From December to February Gulmarg becomes a genuine ski resort, with powder slopes drawing skiers and snowboarders. In summer the same slopes offer meadow walks, pony rides and the high golf course. Whatever the season, Gulmarg is Kashmir at its most dramatic.
There is no airport at Gulmarg itself. Fly to Srinagar (SXR) — direct from Delhi, Mumbai and Bengaluru, or one stop via Delhi from other cities — then drive up by car or taxi, which we arrange. The road climbs steadily through pine forest into the resort.
March to October brings green meadows and mild days, ideal for the gondola and gentle walking. December to February is prime snow and skiing season. Weather changes quickly at altitude, so warm, waterproof layers are essential all year.
