Kashmir Houseboat Stay
Sleep on the water in a classic cedar houseboat, one of Kashmir's most memorable experiences
A houseboat stay on Dal Lake is the quintessential Kashmir experience — nights spent afloat in a carved-cedar boat, mornings that begin with mist lifting off the water and floating vendors gliding past on their shikaras. These characterful boats blend old-world woodwork with cosy comforts, and they place you right at the heart of Srinagar's lake life. From your deck you can watch the Mughal gardens catch the light and set off by shikara at a moment's notice. Holiday Vibez arranges houseboat stays as part of a wider valley circuit for a truly local sense of place.

The houseboat experience
Kashmir's houseboats are a tradition dating back generations — floating homes of carved cedar, with wood-panelled lounges, comfortable bedrooms and open decks over the water. Staying aboard is peaceful and immersive: you wake to birdsong and the ripple of passing shikaras, and you are only steps from Srinagar's sights. It is one of the most atmospheric ways to experience the valley.
Houseboats & Dal Lake
Most houseboats moor on Dal Lake, with quieter options on adjoining Nigeen Lake. Life on the lake includes:
- Shikara rides to floating gardens and markets
- The early-morning floating vegetable market
- Lotus beds in bloom during summer
- Sunset and sunrise views from your own deck
How to reach
Fly to Srinagar (SXR) — direct flights from Delhi, Mumbai and Bengaluru, with one-stop connections via Delhi from most other cities. Your houseboat is a short transfer from the airport, with the final approach by shikara across the lake. As domestic travel, Indian travellers need no visa or permit.
Best time & weather
A houseboat stay is pleasant across most of the year, but March to October is loveliest, with blooming gardens, lotus beds and mild weather. Winters are cold and atmospheric, sometimes with snow on the surrounding peaks. Carry warm layers as lake evenings can be chilly even in summer.
Travel tips
Choose a well-reviewed houseboat and confirm which lake it sits on, as Nigeen is generally calmer than central Dal. Keep some cash for shikara vendors and small purchases. Mobile signal is usually good in Srinagar, though patchier on day trips into the mountains.

Real stories from real journeys
Thousands of families and couples across South India have travelled with us — here's what a few of them had to say.
Travelling with my parents and two kids, I was nervous. Holiday Vibez planned every single day perfectly, and the Alleppey houseboat was the highlight. We are already planning our next trip with them.
Best price I found anywhere, and the desert safari and Burj Khalifa tickets were all sorted before we even landed. The team was on WhatsApp whenever I had a question.
The Gulmarg gondola, the shikara ride on Dal Lake — exactly like the photos, no surprises at all. By the end of the trip our driver felt like family.
Booked a fairly last-minute Phuket trip and they still got me a great deal with visa help included. Honest, smooth and genuinely helpful people.
Scuba at Havelock was a dream come true. Every transfer and every hotel was exactly as promised. Worth every rupee, and I have already recommended them to friends.
