The trek to Paro Taktsang, better known as the Tiger's Nest, is Bhutan's defining experience — a sacred monastery clinging to a sheer cliff at around 3,120m. The round-trip hike from the valley floor takes roughly five to six hours, climbing through blue-pine forest and prayer-flag ridges to one of the Himalayas' most photographed sights. It is moderately demanding but achievable at a steady pace with our experienced guides. We arrange your Entry Permit and manage the Sustainable Development Fee.

About the trek

The Tiger's Nest is Bhutan's most sacred site and its most rewarding day hike. From the trailhead you climb steadily to around 3,120m, covering roughly five to six hours round trip. The trail is well used and broken by tea-house and viewpoint stops, but the altitude and gradient make it moderately demanding.

Fitness & acclimatisation

You do not need to be a mountaineer, but reasonable fitness helps. We recommend spending a day at Paro's altitude before the hike, walking at a steady rhythm, keeping hydrated and starting early to avoid the midday sun. Ponies are available for part of the ascent, though not for the final stairs.

How to reach the trailhead

The trek starts a short drive from Paro town. Travellers from South India fly into Paro International Airport (PBH), the country's only airport, then transfer to the trailhead. Overland entry via Phuentsholing is also possible.

Entry permit & documents

Indian citizens do not need a traditional visa for Bhutan. You travel on a passport or Voter ID with an Entry Permit that Holiday Vibez arranges. The Sustainable Development Fee is currently ₹1,200 per person per night for Indian nationals, children discounted and under-6s exempt (subject to change). Carry passport-size photos for the paperwork.

Best time & weather

March to May and September to November offer the clearest, most stable conditions for the hike. We arrange guided treks but cannot control mountain weather, so we build in flexibility and honest expectations about clouds and cold. Winter hikes are possible but chilly, and monsoon paths can be slippery.
