Bhutan's tshechu festivals are among the Himalaya's most vivid spectacles — days of masked cham dances, music and colour held in dzong courtyards to honour Guru Rinpoche. The best known are the Paro and Thimphu tshechus, where monks and laymen perform sacred dances before huge, joyful crowds. Because festival dates follow the Bhutanese lunar calendar, they shift each year, so we plan your trip around the confirmed dates. Holiday Vibez arranges your Bhutan Entry Permit and a front-row cultural experience.

What is a tshechu?

A tshechu is a religious festival held on the tenth day of a month in the Bhutanese calendar to honour Guru Rinpoche. Monks and laymen perform masked cham dances that recount Buddhist teachings, while communities gather in their finest clothes. Attending one is the single best way to witness living Bhutanese culture.

Which festival to choose

The two most popular options are:

  • Paro Tshechu — spring, ending with a giant thongdrel
  • Thimphu Tshechu — autumn, one of the largest and liveliest

Smaller regional festivals offer a quieter, more intimate experience.

Festival dates

Because tshechus follow the lunar calendar, their Gregorian dates change every year and are confirmed in advance by the authorities. We plan and price your trip around the official dates, so please enquire early as festival periods are popular and hotels fill quickly.

How to reach

Fly into Paro (PBH); the Paro and Thimphu festival venues are within easy driving distance. All transfers are by private vehicle with your guide, who secures good viewing positions in the courtyard.

Entry permit & documents

Indian citizens do not need a traditional visa. You need an Entry Permit, which Holiday Vibez arranges, and travel on a valid Indian passport or Voter ID. The Sustainable Development Fee is currently about ₹1,200 per person per night for Indians (children discounted, under-6 exempt; subject to change).

Etiquette & tips

Dress modestly and respectfully, ask before photographing individuals, and follow your guide's guidance on where to sit or stand. Arrive early for the popular dance days and the dawn thongdrel unveiling, and be patient in the large, happy crowds.
