Tarapith, on the banks of the Dwarka river in Birbhum district, is the shrine of Maa Tara, worshipped here as one of the ten Mahavidyas of the Shakta tradition. Tradition holds that the third eye of Sati fell at this spot, and the site is revered both as a Shakti Peetha and, more particularly, as a Siddha Peetha — a seat where sadhana is believed to bear fruit. What pilgrims see in the sanctum is a fierce four-armed metal image garlanded with skulls; beneath it, and considered the older and truer form, lies a stone image of Tara nursing the infant Shiva. The temple is inseparable from the Mahashmashan, the working cremation ground beside it, and from the tantric saint Bamakhepa (1837–1911), who lived and worshipped there and whose ashram stands nearby.
October to March is the comfortable window — Birbhum's summers are hot and humid and the monsoon makes the riverside approach messy. Kali Puja (October or November) and Kaushiki Amavasya (usually late August or early September) are the two great nights here; Kaushiki Amavasya in particular is punishingly crowded, with lakhs of devotees and night-long queues, and it is not a date to bring frail elders or small children. For an unhurried darshan, pick an ordinary weekday outside these festivals.
The nearest railhead is Rampurhat Junction, roughly 8–9 km away, well connected by trains from Howrah and Sealdah (about 3.5–4 hours from Kolkata); autos and taxis run from the station to the temple gate. The nearest airport is Kolkata (Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International), about 220–230 km away, from where it is a 5–6 hour drive. By road, Tarapith is reached from Kolkata via NH-12 through Bardhaman and Rampurhat; Shantiniketan is roughly 80 km away and is often combined into the same trip.
Two things families should know before booking. First, this is an active tantric shrine: animal sacrifice is performed here, and the temple prasad famously includes goat meat and shol fish rather than vegetarian bhog — visitors who are strictly vegetarian or uneasy with sacrifice should be prepared. Second, the Mahashmashan cremation ground adjoins the temple and cremations and sadhus' rituals are visible from the precinct. The temple courtyard is crowded and the approach lane is narrow; elders will want a helper. Photography rules inside the sanctum are enforced by the temple staff — confirm with the temple before you travel, and please note that no travel agent can arrange, reserve or speed up darshan, which the temple committee alone manages.

Is Tarapith one of the 51 Shakti Peethas?
It is widely counted among them — tradition, drawn from texts such as the Shakti Peetha lists, holds that Sati's third eye fell here. Different lists of the 51 Peethas vary, and Tarapith's greater fame in Bengal rests on its standing as a Siddha Peetha, a seat where spiritual practice is believed to succeed. Devotees treat it as both.
Can we visit Tarapith with elderly parents and children?
Yes, on ordinary days. The temple is on flat ground with no climb, which suits elders. The difficulty is crowd density rather than terrain, so avoid Kaushiki Amavasya and Kali Puja with a frail traveller. The cremation ground next door and the sight of animal sacrifice are worth explaining to children beforehand.
What do people offer at Tarapith, and where do pilgrims stay?
Common offerings are hibiscus flowers, red cloth, sweets and coconut, and many devotees take the temple's non-vegetarian bhog as prasad. Rampurhat, 8–9 km away, has the wider choice of hotels, while Tarapith town itself has lodges and dharamshalas close to the temple; both fill up completely around the amavasya festivals, so book well ahead.
