The Shree Jagannath Temple at Puri is dedicated to Jagannath, a form of Vishnu, worshipped here not in stone but as a wooden figure with large round eyes and stub-like arms, standing alongside his brother Balabhadra and sister Subhadra. It is the eastern seat of the Char Dham, the four great Vaishnava pilgrimage centres along with Badrinath, Dwarka and Rameswaram, and draws pilgrims from every part of India. The present temple was built from the twelfth century onwards under Anantavarman Chodaganga of the Eastern Ganga dynasty, in the Kalinga style, and its main tower rises roughly 65 metres (about 214 feet) over the sanctum, the tallest temple structure in Odisha. Crowning it is the Nilachakra, an eight-spoked disc of eight-metal alloy, above which a flag is changed by hand every day — the sight most visitors look up for first.
October to February is the comfortable window, when the coastal heat and humidity ease and the sea breeze makes walking around the temple and the beach pleasant for elders. Ratha Yatra, the chariot festival in the month of Ashadha (June or July), is the temple's greatest occasion, but it is punishingly crowded — lakhs of pilgrims in monsoon heat, with long waits and heavy movement restrictions — and is not a comfortable choice for older travellers or small children.
The nearest airport is Biju Patnaik International Airport at Bhubaneswar, about 60 km away, roughly one and a half hours by road. Puri has its own railway station, a terminus with direct trains from Kolkata, Delhi, Chennai and other cities, and the temple is only about 2 km from it — an easy auto or cycle-rickshaw ride. By road, Puri is connected to Bhubaneswar by the four-lane NH-316, with regular buses and taxis running through the day.
Entry is restricted to Hindus; non-Hindus and foreign nationals are not permitted inside the temple, and can view the shrine from the roof of the Raghunandan Library across the road. Mobile phones, cameras, electronic gadgets, footwear and leather articles are not allowed inside; cloakroom facilities are available near the entrance to deposit them. Photography inside the temple is prohibited. During Anasara — the fortnight after Snana Yatra in Jyeshtha (usually June) — the deities are kept in seclusion and are not available for darshan; pilgrims traditionally go to the Alarnath temple at Brahmagiri instead. Please confirm darshan timings and any current restrictions with the temple administration before you travel.

Can non-Hindus or foreign visitors enter the Jagannath Temple in Puri?
No. The temple administration permits entry only to Hindus, and this is enforced at the gates. Non-Hindu and foreign visitors usually view the temple from the terrace of the Raghunandan Library opposite the Singhadwara (Lion Gate), which gives a clear view of the main tower and complex.
Can a travel agent arrange VIP or quick darshan for us?
No. Darshan queues at Srimandir are run entirely by the temple administration, and no agent, hotel or tour operator can obtain, reserve or speed up entry. We can plan your travel, stay and transport around the temple, but the queue itself is the temple's own. Please check current darshan arrangements with the temple before you travel.
Is Ratha Yatra a good time to bring elderly parents?
It is the most significant time spiritually, but it is also the hardest physically — enormous crowds on Grand Road, high humidity, road closures and long periods on foot. If your family includes elders or young children and the festival is not essential to you, October to February is far more manageable.
Where do the deities go during Anasara?
After the Snana Yatra bathing ritual in Jyeshtha (around June), the deities are kept away from public view for about a fortnight while they are said to recover. Pilgrims traditionally travel to the Alarnath temple at Brahmagiri, about 25 km from Puri, during this period. Dates shift each year with the lunar calendar, so confirm before booking.
