Lingaraj Temple is the largest and most important temple of Bhubaneswar's old quarter, dedicated to Shiva worshipped here as Lingaraja, "king of the lingam", with Parvati as his consort. The temple in its present form dates largely to the late eleventh century under the Somavamsi rulers, with later additions by the Ganga kings, and is regarded as the mature expression of the Kalinga Deula style — a sanctum, jagamohana (assembly hall), natamandira (dance hall) and bhoga-mandapa set on one axis. Its most striking feature is the curved rekha tower rising about 55 metres (180 ft) over the sanctum, carved along its whole height and visible from far across the city. Inside the laterite compound wall stand more than a hundred subsidiary shrines, and the sacred Bindusagar tank lies just to the north, where pilgrims bathe on festival days.
October to February is the comfortable window, when Bhubaneswar's heat and humidity ease and walking the large stone complex is manageable for elders. Mahashivaratri, in Phalguna (February or March), is the temple's biggest night and draws very large crowds with long waits; Ashokashtami in Chaitra (March or April), when the Rukuna Rath carries the deity to the Rameshwar Deula, is similarly packed. April to June is uncomfortably hot, and the monsoon months are wet.
Biju Patnaik International Airport, Bhubaneswar, is the nearest airport, roughly 5-7 km from the temple, about 20 minutes by taxi or auto. Bhubaneswar Railway Station is around 4-6 km away and is the practical railhead, with Lingaraj Temple Road station closer still but served by fewer trains. By road the temple sits in the Old Town off National Highway 16, with Puri about 60 km and Cuttack about 30 km away; autos, app cabs and city buses all run to the temple lane, and the final stretch is walked.
Non-Hindus are not permitted inside the temple. A raised viewing platform outside the northern boundary wall allows a clear view of the main tower and the complex from the outside, and is commonly used by foreign visitors. Leather items are generally left outside, and footwear is removed before entry; confirm current entry rules and darshan hours with the temple administration before you travel.

Can foreigners or non-Hindus enter Lingaraj Temple?
No. Entry into the temple is restricted to Hindus. Non-Hindu visitors can see the tower and the courtyard from the viewing platform built outside the northern wall, which gives a good view of the complex.
How much time should we keep for Lingaraj Temple?
Most pilgrims spend one to two hours, since the compound holds more than a hundred smaller shrines besides the main sanctum. On Shivaratri and Ashokashtami expect considerably longer, as queues are heavy. Timings and queue arrangements are set by the temple administration, so check with them before you plan the day.
Is it easy for elderly pilgrims?
There is no hill or long climb — the temple is on level ground in the Old Town. The walking is over stone paving and courtyards, barefoot, which can be hot in the middle of the day, so early morning or evening is easier. A short walk from the drop-off point to the gate is unavoidable.
What else can we see nearby?
The Bindusagar tank is immediately north of the temple, and the Mukteshwar, Rajarani and Parasurameswara temples are all within a couple of kilometres in the same Old Town cluster. Puri and the Konark Sun Temple are usually combined with Bhubaneswar on the same trip.
