The Chausathi Yogini Temple at Hirapur is a small circular shrine dedicated to the sixty-four Yoginis, attendant goddesses of the Shakti tradition, with a form of the Goddess at the centre. It is attributed to the Bhauma-Kara period, around the 9th century CE, and is traditionally credited to a queen named Hiradevi. Its most distinctive feature is that it has no roof: the sandstone wall forms an open circle barely a few metres across, and set into niches around the inner face are black chlorite Yogini images, each about knee-high, most of which survive. It is one of only a handful of surviving Yogini temples in India, and pilgrims and students of Shakta worship travel here because so few examples of this open-to-the-sky, circular form remain anywhere.
October to February is the comfortable window, when Odisha's coastal humidity eases and the walk around the open enclosure is pleasant. Durga Puja and Kali Puja bring the largest gatherings and the strongest devotional atmosphere, though the courtyard is very small and fills quickly. Avoid April to June, when the midday heat on open stone is hard on elders, and the heaviest monsoon weeks, since there is no roof for shelter.
Hirapur village sits on the outskirts of Bhubaneswar, and the temple is usually reached as a short half-day trip from the city. Biju Patnaik International Airport, Bhubaneswar, is the nearest airport and Bhubaneswar Railway Station the nearest railhead, both roughly 10 to 20 km away depending on the route taken. Taxis and autos run from the city, and the drive normally takes 30 to 45 minutes on tarred road; Baramunda bus terminal is about 15 km away for those arriving by bus.
This is a small, roofless monument in ASI care rather than a large temple complex — footwear is removed at the entrance and the stone floor gets hot around midday, so morning visits suit elderly pilgrims better. The enclosure holds only a few people comfortably at a time. Rules on photography and on entering the inner circle are set by the site staff and can change; confirm with the temple or the site attendants before you travel.

Why does the Chausathi Yogini Temple have no roof?
Yogini temples of this type were built as hypaethral, or open-to-the-sky, structures. The circular wall carries the sixty-four Yogini images facing inward, with no roof over the courtyard. Hirapur is one of the few such temples still standing.
Are all sixty-four Yogini images still there?
Most of them are, but not all. Several were damaged or lost over the centuries, and a few niches are empty or hold replacements. The surviving black stone figures are still the reason most visitors come.
Can we combine this with other temples in Bhubaneswar?
Yes. Hirapur is close enough to Bhubaneswar that most pilgrims pair it with Lingaraj, Mukteshwar and Rajarani in the same day. Puri and Konark are the usual onward stops. Check darshan timings with each temple before you plan the day, as they differ.
