Maa Tarini Temple at Ghatgaon, about 45 km from Keonjhar town in northern Odisha, is one of the most visited Shakti shrines in the state. The goddess is not worshipped as a full carved figure but as a small round red-painted stone head with two large eyes and a vertical mark for the nose and tilak — a form Odia devotees recognise instantly and one that sets the shrine apart from the sculpted Devi images elsewhere. Tradition holds that the Keonjhar chief Govinda Bhanja, who served the Gajapati king of Puri as a commander in the Kanchi campaign in the late fifteenth century, was bringing the goddess home on the condition that he never look back; near Ghatgaon he turned, and she stayed where she stood. Pilgrims come chiefly to make and later repay vows, the customary offering being a coconut, and the temple stands in a wooded stretch of country rather than in a town.
October to February is the easiest stretch for elders — dry, cool weather and comfortable road travel. The biggest gathering is the Chaiti Parba (Chaiti Yatra) around the turn of Chaitra and Baisakh in April, when the goddess is dressed in Suna Besha and tens of thousands of devotees arrive over the week; it is genuinely crowded and hot, so families travelling with older members may prefer any other month. Avoid mid-June to September, when heavy monsoon rain makes the forest road stretch slow.
The nearest airport is Biju Patnaik International Airport, Bhubaneswar, roughly 170 km away, a four to five hour drive. The closest railhead is Harichandanpur, about 17 km from Ghatgaon; Keonjhar (Kendujhar) station is around 45–46 km away and better connected for most travellers. By road, Ghatgaon sits on the Keonjhar–Cuttack route, about 45 km from Keonjhar town, 170 km from Bhubaneswar and roughly 205 km from Cuttack, with buses and taxis running from Keonjhar and Bhubaneswar.
Ghatgaon is a small roadside settlement in a forested belt, not a temple town, so lodging and dining options right at the shrine are limited — most pilgrims stay at Keonjhar, Cuttack or Bhubaneswar and visit as a day trip. Coconuts and puja items are sold outside the temple. Ritual times and any restrictions on cameras or on carrying items inside are set by the temple administration and can change; confirm with the temple before you travel.

What is the usual offering at Maa Tarini Temple?
A coconut. It is the customary offering here, and many devotees who have made a vow return specifically to break coconuts in thanksgiving — Tuesdays and Saturdays are especially popular for this. Coconuts are readily available from stalls outside the shrine.
Can Maa Tarini Temple be done as a day trip from Bhubaneswar?
Yes. It is about 170 km by road, roughly four to five hours each way, so a same-day return is common but makes for a long day. Families travelling with elders often break the journey at Keonjhar town, 45 km from the shrine, and go out to Ghatgaon the next morning.
Is there a climb or a large number of steps at the temple?
No. The shrine is at ground level with easy road access right up to it, which makes it manageable for elderly pilgrims. The difficulty is the crowd during Chaiti Parba in April rather than the terrain.
Is Maa Tarini one of the classical Shakti Peethas?
She is widely revered across Odisha as a major Shakti shrine and is described locally as a Shakti Peetha, but the temple is not part of the traditional list of Peethas associated with the Sati legend. Its importance rests on its own long-standing devotional tradition in Odisha.
