Rajarani Temple is an 11th-century Shaivite temple in Bhubaneswar, built in the Kalinga style and generally credited to the Somavamshi period; it is thought to have been known originally as Indreshvara. Its name comes from the dull red and yellow sandstone used to build it, which is called "rajarania" locally, rather than from any king and queen. The sanctum today holds no image, and the temple is preserved by the Archaeological Survey of India as a protected monument rather than run as a working shrine. What draws people is the carving — the 18-metre curvilinear spire wrapped in tiers of miniature turrets, the eight dikpalas or guardians of the directions ringed around the tower, and the famous panels of graceful female figures on the walls, which is why art historians rate it among the finest surviving sculpture of the Odisha temple tradition.
November to February is the comfortable window, when Bhubaneswar is dry and mild and the open sandstone platform is pleasant to walk around; March to June is very hot and the stone radiates heat by mid-morning. Mid-January is the most rewarding time, when the Rajarani Music Festival is held in the temple grounds over three evenings of Odissi, Hindustani and Carnatic classical music — the exact dates are announced each year by the state culture department. Crowds are moderate year-round and it is far quieter than Lingaraj or Puri.
Biju Patnaik International Airport, Bhubaneswar, is roughly 4-5 km away, about 15 minutes by taxi or auto. Bhubaneswar Railway Station is a similar 4 km, and the temple sits off Tankapani Road in the old-town temple belt, an easy auto ride from anywhere in the city. Most visitors combine it with Lingaraj, Mukteshwar and the Udayagiri-Khandagiri caves in one day; Puri is about 60 km and Konark about 65 km by road.
This is an ASI-protected monument, not a live temple — the sanctum is empty, there is no puja, prasad or darshan queue here, and entry is by ASI ticket. Come for the architecture and sculpture, and plan your actual worship at Lingaraj or the other working temples nearby. Some of the wall panels are erotic in the classical Odishan manner, which families with children may wish to know in advance. Confirm opening days and any festival-week arrangements with the ASI site office before you travel.

Can we do puja or get darshan at Rajarani Temple?
No. The sanctum has no deity image and the site is maintained by the Archaeological Survey of India as a monument, so there is no puja, no prasad and no darshan line. If your group wants worship, Lingaraj Temple and Mukteshwar Temple are both a short drive away in the same old-town cluster.
Why is it called Rajarani if there is no king and queen there?
The name comes from the building material — the dull red and yellow sandstone used for the temple is called rajarania in the local tongue. The popular story about a royal couple is a later folk explanation and is not accepted by historians.
Is it suitable for elderly visitors?
Reasonably so. The temple stands on a raised platform in a level garden, so there are a few steps up but no climb and no long walk. There is little shade on the platform itself, so mornings or late afternoons in the cooler months are kindest.
How much time should we keep for it?
About 45 minutes to an hour is enough to walk the platform and study the carvings. It pairs naturally with Mukteshwar and Lingaraj in a half-day Bhubaneswar temple circuit.
