Bakreswar, on the Bakreswar (Paphara) river in Birbhum district, is counted among the 51 Shakta Peethas. Tradition holds that the portion between Sati's eyebrows — taken as the seat of her mind — fell here, and the Devi is worshipped as Mahishmardini with Vakranath (Bakreswar) as the attendant Bhairava; the Shiva shrine of Bakranath and the Mahishmardini temple stand within the same complex, along with a Bhairabnath temple and a Bhavatarini shrine. The name is read as "bakra" (bent) and "ishwar", and tradition connects it to the sage Ashtavakra, who is said to have received Shiva's blessing at this spot after long penance. What sets Bakreswar apart physically is the cluster of natural hot springs beside the temples — named kundas such as Agni Kunda, Dudh Kunda, Surya Kunda, Bhairav Kunda and Brahma Kunda — whose sulphur- and mineral-rich water pilgrims have long treated as curative, so a visit here is usually a temple darshan and a bath in the same trip.
October to March is the comfortable window, when Birbhum is dry and mild and a dip in the warm kundas is pleasant rather than punishing; April to June is very hot and the monsoon months bring heavy rain. Mahashivaratri (February or March) is the big occasion, with a large fair drawing crowds from across Birbhum and beyond — elders travelling with family should expect dense queues and heavy footfall on that day, and may prefer an ordinary weekday instead.
The nearest railhead is Dubrajpur, roughly 10 km away; Suri, the district town, is about 24 km, and Sainthia and Bolpur-Santiniketan are the other usable stations for trains from Howrah. By road Bakreswar is around 230 km from Kolkata, with taxis and buses available from Suri, Dubrajpur and Bolpur. For flights, Kazi Nazrul Islam Airport at Andal near Durgapur is the closest at roughly 60-70 km, while Kolkata's Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport, about 190-200 km away, has far more connections.
The hot springs are genuinely hot, not warm — Agni Kunda in particular is scalding and is not a bathing spring. Elderly pilgrims and children should use only the kundas the temple staff point out for bathing, step in slowly, and keep away from the hottest pools. Timings for darshan and for the bathing kundas can change, especially around festival days, so confirm with the temple before you travel.

Can we bathe in the Bakreswar hot springs?
Yes, bathing in the designated kundas is part of what most pilgrims come for, and the mineral water is traditionally regarded as healing. Not every spring is meant for bathing — Agni Kunda is far too hot — so use only the pools indicated on site and check current arrangements locally, as access can be regulated on busy days.
Can Bakreswar be combined with Tarapith and Santiniketan?
Yes, this is the usual Birbhum circuit. Tarapith and Santiniketan are both in the same district and are commonly done with Bakreswar over two to three days, using Suri, Bolpur or Dubrajpur as the base. Road distances vary, so plan the day's driving with your operator.
Is there a dress code or entry restriction?
No unusual restriction is reported at Bakreswar. Modest, traditional clothing is expected as at any Bengal temple, and you will want a change of clothes if you plan to bathe in the kundas. Rules on photography inside the sanctum and on the queue system are set by the temple authorities — ask on arrival.
