Belur Math, on the west bank of the Hooghly at Belur in Howrah district, is the headquarters of the Ramakrishna Math and Ramakrishna Mission, the monastic order founded by Swami Vivekananda. The land was acquired in 1897 and Vivekananda himself consecrated the site, installing the relics of his guru Sri Ramakrishna Paramahamsa here in December 1898; the present Sri Ramakrishna Temple was built to a design he conceived. That temple is the campus's defining feature — a deliberate fusion in which a South Indian gopuram-style entrance, a Rajput-Mughal facade, a dome recalling Renaissance Europe and a ground plan in the shape of a Christian cross were combined so the building reads as temple, mosque or church depending on where you stand. Pilgrims come for darshan of the marble image of Sri Ramakrishna over the relics, and for the separate shrines of Sri Sarada Devi, Swami Vivekananda and Swami Brahmananda spread across the riverside grounds.
October to March, when Kolkata's heat and humidity ease and the riverside grounds are comfortable for elders; the monsoon months of June to September are wet and the pre-monsoon April-May stretch is very hot. Durga Puja (September-October), Kalpataru Utsav on 1 January and Sri Ramakrishna's birth anniversary (February-March) are the biggest occasions and draw enormous crowds with long queues, so families travelling with elderly members may prefer an ordinary weekday.
Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport at Dum Dum is roughly 15-20 km away by road, about an hour depending on traffic. Belur station on the Howrah-Bardhaman local line is the nearest railhead at about 1-2 km, and Howrah Junction, the main terminus for long-distance trains, is roughly 6-8 km south. By road it is about 25 km from central Kolkata via the GT Road or the Vivekananda/Nivedita bridges, and taxis and app cabs run freely. Many visitors instead take the Hooghly ferry — services connect Belur Math ghat with Dakshineswar across the river and with Kolkata ghats, which is often faster than the road.
The campus closes to visitors for a few hours around midday and reopens in the afternoon, so plan a morning or evening visit and confirm the current hours with the Math before you travel. Footwear must be left outside the shrines and modest dress covering shoulders and knees is expected. Photography inside the shrines and prayer halls is restricted; ask before using a camera or phone anywhere on the grounds. Entry is open to people of all faiths.

Is Belur Math a temple, and can non-Hindus go inside?
It is the headquarters of a monastic order with several working shrines on its grounds, and the main Sri Ramakrishna Temple is open to visitors of every religion. There is no restriction by faith. Ordinary respect for a place of worship — silence, removing footwear, modest clothing — is what is asked of everyone.
Can we visit Belur Math and Dakshineswar Kali Temple on the same day?
Yes, and most pilgrims do. They face each other across the Hooghly and a ferry crosses between them in roughly half an hour, so the two can comfortably be combined in one day. Check the ferry's running times on the day, as service depends on river conditions.
Is the site manageable for elderly parents?
Largely yes. The grounds are flat and paved with shaded paths along the river, and there is no climb or long flight of steps to the main temple, unlike many hill shrines. The distances between the four shrines involve some walking, and queues on festival days can mean a long wait standing, so an ordinary weekday is easier.
