Kalighat is the temple of the goddess Kali in south Kolkata, and one of the 51 Shakti Peethas — tradition holds that the toes of Sati's right foot fell here when her body was scattered across the subcontinent. The deity is worshipped in a striking, unmistakable form: a face with three eyes, four arms and a long protruding tongue of gold, the arms holding a scimitar and a severed head alongside the gestures of blessing and fearlessness. The present temple was built under the patronage of the Sabarna Roy Choudhury family and completed in 1809, though the site is referred to in much older Bengali texts, and it carries the classic Bengali "aat-chala" eight-sloped roof rather than a north-Indian shikhara. The name of the city itself is commonly traced to this shrine, and for Bengali families it remains the household seat of the Mother.
October to February, when Kolkata is dry and pleasant; March to June is hot and humid and the monsoon from June to September brings heavy rain and waterlogged lanes around the temple. Kali Puja (on the Diwali new-moon night in October or November) and Durga Puja are the great occasions here, but be plain about it — the temple and the surrounding lanes are punishingly crowded on those days and on amavasya, and Tuesdays and Saturdays are busy every week. Elderly pilgrims are far more comfortable on an ordinary winter weekday morning.
Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport at Dum Dum is about 25-26 km away, roughly an hour by taxi depending on traffic. Sealdah station is about 7 km and Howrah about 13-14 km; both have taxis and app cabs. The easiest approach is the Kolkata Metro Blue Line — Kalighat station is about half a kilometre from the temple, a walk of a few minutes, with Jatin Das Park the alternative. The final stretch is through narrow market lanes where cars cannot go, so expect a short walk on foot whichever way you arrive.
Two things worth knowing before you book. First, animal sacrifice (goats) is part of the living ritual here and takes place at the Haracktala within the complex, most heavily on Tuesdays, Saturdays and during Kali Puja — families with young children or vegetarian elders should be prepared for it. Second, touts and unauthorised "pandas" routinely approach pilgrims at the gates promising quick or special darshan for a fee; the Calcutta High Court has ruled against this practice and no one can legitimately sell you a place in the queue. Deal only with the temple's own counters, carry as little cash and jewellery as possible in the crowded lanes, and confirm darshan timings with the temple before you travel.

Can we visit Kalighat and Dakshineswar on the same day?
Yes, many pilgrims do. Both are in Kolkata and both sit on the Metro Blue Line — Kalighat in the south, Dakshineswar at the northern end — so a single day covering both is comfortable if you start early. Allow for heavy traffic and long queues on weekends, Tuesdays, Saturdays and festival days.
Can a travel agent arrange faster or special darshan at Kalighat?
No. The queue at Kalighat is run entirely by the temple authorities, and no agent, guide or panda can reserve, skip or speed up your darshan — anyone offering to do so for money is acting against a Calcutta High Court ruling. Is there a long climb or many steps?
No. The temple sits at street level and there is no climb or trek involved, which makes it manageable for elders. The difficulty is crowding — the approach runs through narrow, busy market lanes, and the last stretch has to be walked.
