Shri Sammed Shikharji stands on Parasnath hill in Giridih district, Jharkhand, the highest hill in the state at roughly 1,370 metres. Jain tradition holds that twenty of the twenty-four Tirthankaras attained moksha here, among them Bhagwan Parshvanatha, the twenty-third Tirthankara, after whom the hill is named — which is why both Digambara and Shvetambara Jains regard it as the foremost tirtha of their faith. Rather than one large temple, the sacred site is a chain of thirty-one small hilltop shrines called tonks, each enshrining the charan (carved footprints) of a Tirthankara, spread along a paved ridge walk. The base village of Madhuban at the foot of the hill holds the dharamshalas, bhojanshalas and the temples where most yatras begin.
October to March is the sensible window — the climate is cool and dry, and the long climb is manageable for older pilgrims. Posh Dashami in December-January and Mahavir Jayanti in March-April bring very large Jain crowds; dharamshalas and vehicles in Madhuban fill up weeks ahead and the track is congested from before dawn, so book early or pick a non-festival week. Avoid the July-September monsoon, when the paved path is slippery, and April-June, when the heat on an open hillside is punishing.
Parasnath railway station on the Delhi-Kolkata main line is the usual railhead, roughly 20-25 km from Madhuban by road, with shared jeeps and taxis waiting outside; many Rajdhani and long-distance trains stop there. The nearest airports are Deoghar (about 110 km) and Ranchi (about 165-180 km), with Kolkata a longer but better-connected option; all are reached by road via NH-2 and the Giridih road. Madhuban itself is the road head — private vehicles go no further than the base, and the ascent is on foot or by doli.
This is a serious climb, not a temple visit. It is about 9 km uphill from Madhuban to the summit shrine and roughly 27 km in all if you walk the full round of tonks — commonly 8 to 12 hours, started well before sunrise. Elderly pilgrims and those who cannot walk it normally hire a doli (palanquin carried by bearers) arranged at Madhuban; agree the rate and the route in advance. The path is paved but steep in stretches. Leather items are not carried on the hill, and eating on the hill is avoided by observant pilgrims, so most carry only water and start on an empty stomach. Confirm shrine access and any restrictions with the trust at Madhuban before you travel.

Can elderly parents do the Sammed Shikharji yatra?
Yes, most elders do it by doli — a seat carried by two to four bearers, hired at Madhuban at the start of the climb. It is still a long day of 8 to 12 hours on an exposed hillside, so plan a rest day in Madhuban before and after, carry water and any regular medicines, and start before dawn to avoid the midday sun. Anyone with heart or breathing trouble should take a doctor's opinion first.
How long does the climb take and how far is it?
About 9 km up from Madhuban to the summit shrine of Parshvanatha, and roughly 27 km in total if you complete the circuit of all thirty-one tonks and return. Walking pilgrims usually leave between 2 and 4 am and are back by afternoon. A separate full parikrama of the hills is far longer and is undertaken only by those prepared for it.
Where do pilgrims stay, and is Jain food available?
Madhuban at the base has a large number of dharamshalas run by Jain trusts and Digambara and Shvetambara institutions, plus bhojanshalas serving pure vegetarian and Jain food. Rooms go quickly around Posh Dashami and Mahavir Jayanti, so book well ahead for those weeks. Timings of temples and bhojanshalas change, so confirm with the trust before you travel.
