Mundeshwari Temple stands on a hill of the Kaimur plateau near Ramgarh village in Kaimur district, Bihar, at roughly 608 feet (185 m). It is a Shakti shrine where Devi Mundeshwari, a form of Durga, is worshipped alongside Shiva in the form of a rare chaturmukha (four-faced) lingam that occupies the centre of the sanctum. The stone shrine has an unusual octagonal plan and is counted among the earliest surviving examples of Nagara-style temple building; it has been an Archaeological Survey of India protected monument since 1915. Pilgrims travel here because worship is believed to have continued at the site without a break since antiquity, which is why it is widely described as one of the oldest functioning Hindu temples in the country. The temple is also known for a bloodless sacrifice custom, in which a goat is offered before the Devi and then released alive rather than killed.
October to March is the comfortable window, when the Kaimur plateau is dry and the hilltop climb is easy on elders; April to June is very hot and the monsoon makes the approach slippery. Navratri (both the Chaitra and Sharad cycles) brings a large fair and the heaviest crowds of the year, and Ramnavami and Mahashivratri also draw big gatherings — if you are travelling with older family members, pick an ordinary weekday instead. Ritual timings and festival arrangements should be confirmed with the temple before you travel.
The nearest airport is Lal Bahadur Shastri International Airport, Varanasi, about 100–110 km away by road. The nearest railhead is Bhabua Road (Mohania) station on the Howrah–New Delhi main line, roughly 22 km from the temple; Bhabua town is about 10 km away and Pandit Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Junction (Mughalsarai) is another well-connected option. By road the temple is reached from Varanasi (about 100 km), Patna (roughly 200 km) and Gaya via NH-19/NH-30, with taxis and shared autos running up from Bhabua and Mohania.
The shrine is on a hilltop. A motorable road now runs most of the way up, but the last stretch is on foot over a flight of steps, so plan for a short climb — allow extra time and rest stops for elderly pilgrims and anyone with knee trouble. There is little shade or shelter at the top, so carry water and go early in the day.

Is Mundeshwari really the oldest temple in India?
It is commonly called the oldest functioning Hindu temple in the country, and the Archaeological Survey of India plaque at the site gives a date of 108 CE. Architectural historians disagree, dating the surviving structure to about the 6th–7th century with parts of the octagonal shrine possibly rebuilt later. What is not disputed is that the site is very old and that worship has continued here for centuries.
Are goats actually killed at the temple?
No. The temple follows a bloodless sacrifice custom: the animal is brought before the Devi, offered symbolically by the priests, and then returned alive to the person who brought it. Devotees describe the goat going still and then being revived; the practice is one of the main reasons visitors come.
Can we do Mundeshwari as a day trip from Varanasi?
Yes. It is roughly 100 km by road, about three hours each way depending on traffic, so a hired car makes a comfortable day trip with time for darshan and the climb. Many families combine it with Sasaram or Rohtas on a longer Bihar circuit.
How difficult is the climb for elders?
Manageable but not flat. Vehicles go up most of the hill and the remaining ascent is a flight of steps. Someone with reasonable mobility can do it slowly with a break or two; a person who cannot handle stairs at all will find it hard.
