Baba Baidyanath Dham at Deoghar in Jharkhand is one of the twelve Jyotirlingas of Shiva, where the lingam is worshipped as Baidyanath, the divine physician, and is held to be swayambhu or self-manifested. Tradition holds that Ravana carried the lingam from Kailash towards Lanka, was made to set it down here, and could not lift it again — the mark on the partly worn lingam is explained by that story. The temple stands under a pyramidal Nagara shikhara about 22 metres high, and the walled complex holds roughly twenty other shrines, among them the Parvati temple facing the main sanctum; the two towers are linked overhead by a red thread, and couples tie a knot there as a marriage vow. Devotees also count Deoghar among the Shakti Peethas, as Hardapeeth, where Sati's heart is believed to have fallen, worshipped here as Jaya Durga.
October to March is the comfortable window, with cool dry days that suit elders; Mahashivratri in February or March is a major but manageable occasion. Shravan, roughly July to August, brings the month-long Shrawani Mela, when kanwariyas walk about 105 km from Sultanganj in Bihar carrying Ganga water — the devotional peak of the year, and punishingly crowded, with several million pilgrims over the month and very long waits in the heat and rain. Avoid Shravan entirely if you are travelling with older parents or small children.
Deoghar Airport is the nearest, roughly 10 km from the temple, with flights from Delhi, Kolkata and a few other metros; Ranchi is the fallback airport at about 250 km. Jasidih Junction on the Howrah–Delhi main line is the main railhead, about 7 km away and served by Rajdhani, Vande Bharat and most long-distance trains, while the smaller Baidyanathdham (Deoghar) station is closer to the temple lanes. By road Deoghar sits on NH-114A and connecting highways — about 255 km from Patna and about 250 km from Ranchi, each six to seven hours by car.
The temple sits inside a dense old-town lane network; vehicles stop some distance away and the last stretch is on foot through crowded bazaar lanes. There is no long climb, but the sanctum approach is narrow and can be slow. Mobile phones and cameras are generally not allowed inside the inner complex, and dress is expected to be traditional and modest. Darshan arrangements, entry rules and puja timings are set by the temple management and change during Shravan and festivals — confirm with the temple before you travel.

Is Baidyanath Dham a Jyotirlinga or a Shakti Peetha?
It is firmly counted among the twelve Jyotirlingas of Shiva. Devotees and the temple's own tradition also treat Deoghar as a Shakti Peetha — Hardapeeth, where Sati's heart is believed to have fallen, worshipped as Jaya Durga in a shrine within the same complex. Scholars do not all agree on the Shakti Peetha identification, so treat it as living tradition rather than settled fact.
Can darshan be booked in advance or arranged quickly through a travel agent?
No. The queue and all darshan arrangements are run entirely by the temple management, and no travel company can obtain, reserve, skip or speed up darshan. We can arrange your travel, stay and transport in Deoghar; the line itself is the temple's alone.
Which other shrines do pilgrims usually add to a Deoghar trip?
Basukinath, a short drive away in Dumka district, is traditionally visited after Baidyanath and most pilgrims pair the two. Nearby Tapovan, Trikut hill and Naulakha Mandir are the usual additions, and Sultanganj in Bihar is the starting point for those doing the kanwar walk in Shravan.
