Nalanda Mahavihara is the excavated remains of a Buddhist monastic university in Bihar, founded under the Gupta emperor Kumaragupta I in about the 5th century CE and active for roughly 700 to 800 years before it was destroyed around 1200 CE. Spread over a long north-south line of red-brick ruins, the site holds eleven monasteries and six brick temples; the largest of them, Temple No. 3, is a stepped stupa traditionally associated with Sariputta, one of the Buddha's two chief disciples, who is said to have been born and to have died in this region. The Chinese pilgrim-monk Xuanzang studied here in the 7th century under the abbot Shilabhadra and carried hundreds of Sanskrit manuscripts back to China, and his account is much of what we know of the place. It is not a working temple with a presiding deity but an archaeological site, protected by the ASI and inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage list in 2016, and pilgrims come to it as one of the great memory-places of the Buddhist world rather than for worship.
October to March is the sensible window: days are dry and mild, roughly 10 to 25 degrees, and the site is almost entirely open ground with little shade, so cooler weather matters more here than at a covered temple. Late October brings the Rajgir Mahotsav, a state-run dance and culture festival 16 km away, which fills hotels in Rajgir and Nalanda together. Buddha Purnima, on the full moon of Vaisakha in April or May, draws Buddhist visitors across Bihar but falls in the hot season, when afternoon temperatures make walking the ruins hard on elders; April to June and the monsoon months are best avoided.
The nearest airport is Patna's Jai Prakash Narayan International Airport, about 89 to 90 km away, roughly two to two and a half hours by road. Rajgir is the closest railway station at about 12 km, while Gaya Junction, about 95 km off, is the better-connected railhead for long-distance trains. Nalanda sits on good highways: Bihar Sharif is 13 km, Pawapuri 26 km, Patna about 90 km and Bodh Gaya about 110 km, so most yatra groups reach it by car or coach as part of a Bodh Gaya-Rajgir-Nalanda circuit.
This is a ruins site, not a functioning shrine, and seeing it properly means a long walk of well over a kilometre on uneven brick paths and low steps, in open sun with very little shade. Elders should plan a slow half-day, carry water, a hat and sturdy shoes, and be ready to skip the further monasteries. The Nalanda Archaeological Museum across the road is a separate entry and is closed one day a week; please confirm current days, timings and ticketing with the ASI office before you travel.

Is there a temple or darshan at Nalanda Mahavihara?
No. Nalanda is an archaeological site of monastery and temple ruins under the Archaeological Survey of India, with no presiding deity, no priest and no darshan queue. Visitors walk through the excavated complex much as they would any protected monument. Pilgrims who want a place of active Buddhist worship usually pair the visit with Bodh Gaya, about 110 km away.
How much time should we keep for Nalanda, and can it be combined with Rajgir and Bodh Gaya?
Two to three hours covers the ruins and the museum at an unhurried pace. It combines naturally with Rajgir, 12 to 16 km away, and Pawapuri at 26 km on the same day, with Bodh Gaya usually taken as a separate day. Many Bihar Buddhist circuit itineraries run Patna to Nalanda to Rajgir to Bodh Gaya over three or four days.
Is the ancient Nalanda University the same as the new Nalanda University campus?
No. The ancient Mahavihara is the ruined site at Nalanda, while Nalanda University is a modern institution revived in 2014 with a separate campus near Rajgir. They are different places a short drive apart, and the historical visit is to the old excavated complex.
