Parasuram Kund is a riverside pilgrimage site on the Lohit river in Lohit district of Arunachal Pradesh, at the point where the Brahmaputra plain meets the Mishmi hills. It is associated with Parashurama, the sixth avatar of Vishnu; tradition holds that after killing his mother Renuka on his father Jamadagni's command, the axe stayed fastened to his hand until he dipped it in the waters here, at which it fell away. There is a temple to Parashurama at the site and a shrine to Devi Renuka, but the object of the yatra is the kund itself — pilgrims come to bathe in the river rather than to see an old built temple. The original pool was destroyed in the 1950 Assam earthquake, and the kund used today formed afterwards where boulders settled into a rough circle in the riverbed.
November to February, when the weather is dry and the river is manageable. The main occasion is Makar Sankranti in mid-January, around 14-15 January, when the Parshuram Kund Mela is held; it draws tens of thousands of pilgrims and sadhus from across India and from Nepal, and the district reports crowds of the order of 70,000 on the bathing day. It is genuinely packed then, rooms in Tezu and nearby towns run out well in advance, and elderly travellers may find a quieter visit in November, early December or February far easier.
The usual air entry is Dibrugarh (Mohanbari) airport in Assam, roughly 200 km away by road; Tezu, the Lohit district headquarters, also has a small airport much closer to the site. The nearest railhead is Tinsukia in Assam, from where the road runs about 165 km via Namsai and Wakro, or via Tezu. State transport and private buses and shared vehicles run from Tinsukia, Namsai, Wakro and Sadiya, and the last stretch is hill road, so allow a full day for the transfer.
Arunachal Pradesh is a permit state. Indian citizens need an Inner Line Permit to enter, and foreign nationals need a Protected Area Permit; the Deputy Commissioner, Lohit district, issues ILPs for this pilgrimage and permit arrangements are also made at the Dirak and Sunpura check posts during the Makar Sankranti mela. Carry original photo ID. Also note that the bathing is in a live Himalayan river, not a walled tank — the current over the old kund site is strong, and elders and children should bathe only at the marked spot and with help. Confirm current permit rules and any temple timings before you travel.

Do I need a permit to visit Parasuram Kund?
Yes. Arunachal Pradesh requires an Inner Line Permit for Indian citizens and a Protected Area Permit for foreign nationals. The Lohit district administration issues ILPs for the pilgrimage, and permits are also arranged at the Dirak and Sunpura check posts during the January mela. Apply before you set out and carry original ID.
Is there an actual temple, or only the river?
Both, but the river is the point. There is a temple to Parashurama and a shrine to Devi Renuka at the site, though the yatra is centred on taking a dip in the Lohit. The pool that pilgrims use today formed after the 1950 earthquake destroyed the original kund.
When is the Parshuram Kund Mela and how crowded does it get?
It centres on Makar Sankranti, around 14-15 January, with the fair running through much of the month. Tens of thousands of pilgrims come, and the district puts up shelters, water, food and medical camps for the period. If you are travelling with elders and want a calm darshan and bath, come in November, December or February instead.
