The Chaturdash Devta Temple at Old Agartala (Khayerpur) enshrines the Chaturdasha Devata, the fourteen gods who are the dynastic deities of the Tripuri people and the family deities of the Manikya Maharajas of Tripura. Unlike most temples, the deities here are not full images — only the heads of the fourteen gods are worshipped, and they are attended in the old Tripuri manner. The temple was built by a Manikya ruler in the 18th century, when the royal capital shifted from Udaipur to Old Agartala, and the fourteen deities were carried to the new capital with it. Its most recognisable feature is the squat Tripuri dome, shaped after the thatched roofs of village huts and crowned with a stupa-like finial that shows Buddhist influence. Since Tripura's merger with the Indian Union in 1949, the temple has been maintained by the state government.
October to March is the comfortable window — dry, cool and easy on elders, with none of the heavy rain that Tripura gets from June onward. The temple's great occasion is Kharchi Puja in the month of Ashar (usually July), a seven-day royal festival of earth worship when the fourteen deities are taken for a ritual bath and a large mela fills the grounds of the old palace; expect very dense crowds, heat and monsoon rain through that week, so plan it only if the festival itself is the reason for the trip.
The temple stands at Khayerpur in Old Agartala, roughly 6-8 km from present-day Agartala city, an easy 20-30 minute drive by taxi or auto on a good road. Maharaja Bir Bikram (MBB) Airport at Agartala is the nearest airport, about 15-20 km away, with direct flights from Kolkata, Guwahati and Delhi. Agartala railway station, on the broad-gauge line linked to Guwahati and Kolkata, is around 10 km from the temple. Agartala is also connected by NH-8 to Guwahati and Silchar, though it is a long road journey.
Animal sacrifice, mainly goats and pigeons, is part of the traditional worship here and is especially visible during Kharchi Puja — families travelling with children or elders who would find this distressing should know before booking. Timings and festival dates shift with the lunar calendar, so confirm with the temple or Tripura Tourism before you travel.

How far is the temple from Agartala city and the airport?
It is about 6-8 km from Agartala city at Old Agartala (Khayerpur), and roughly 15-20 km from MBB Airport. Taxis and autos are readily available; no walking or climbing is involved to reach the shrine.
