The Cathedral of Mary Help of Christians stands on a hill at Laitumkhrah in Shillong and is the cathedral church of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Shillong, the seat of its Metropolitan Archbishop. Catholic mission work on this hill goes back to German Salvatorian missionaries in the 1890s; their wooden Church of the Divine Saviour, built in 1913, burned down on 10 April 1936, and the foundation stone of the present church was blessed on 25 October the same year. The building is known across the North-East for its pale sky-blue exterior, tall arches, terracotta Stations of the Cross brought from Munich and stained-glass windows made at Grenoble in France in 1947; a Grotto church is carved into the hillside directly below. In 1980, the centenary year of the Catholic Church in North-East India, Archbishop Hubert D'Rosario declared it a shrine and pilgrimage centre, and it has drawn devotees from across the region since.
October to April is the comfortable window for Shillong, with clear, cool, dry days and the cathedral at its best against green hills; December brings Christmas services and heavy decoration, and the church is busiest then and at Easter. The Feast of Mary Help of Christians on 24 May draws large gatherings of devotees. June to September is the peak monsoon in Meghalaya, with sustained heavy rain that makes road travel from Guwahati slow.
The cathedral is in Laitumkhrah, roughly 2 km from Police Bazaar in central Shillong, so a local taxi from anywhere in the city takes only a few minutes. The nearest airport is Shillong (Umroi) Airport, about 30 km away, but most travellers fly into Guwahati's Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport, roughly 120-130 km and about 3 to 3.5 hours by road on NH-6. The practical railhead is Guwahati, about 100 km away, with shared and private taxis running to Shillong through the day.
This is a working cathedral, not a monument: Masses and services run through the day, so dress modestly, keep silence inside, and be discreet with cameras or avoid photography altogether during a service. The church sits on a hill and the Grotto below is reached by steps, which elders may find tiring. Service and visiting hours are not fixed for tourists, so confirm with the parish office before you plan a specific day.

Yes. Visitors of all faiths are welcome to enter and sit quietly inside, and there is no entry fee. The only expectation is modest dress and silence, particularly when a Mass or prayer service is in progress.

The exterior is finished in a pale sky-blue that has become the church's signature look across the North-East, and it is often described locally as the blue cathedral. Inside, the light comes through stained-glass windows made in Grenoble, France, in 1947.
How much time should we keep for the cathedral, and what else is nearby?
About 45 minutes to an hour is enough for the main church and the Grotto below it. It sits in Laitumkhrah, close to Police Bazaar, Ward's Lake, Lady Hydari Park and the Don Bosco Museum, so it fits easily into a half-day of Shillong sightseeing.
