Shatrunjaya Hill above the town of Palitana carries one of the densest concentrations of temples anywhere in India — roughly 860 shrines, of which about 108 are large temples, packed into walled clusters called tuks along the ridge. The principal temple enshrines Rishabhanatha (Adinatha), the first Tirthankara, and the hill is regarded by Shvetambara Jains as their holiest tirtha. The earliest temples on the hill date to around the 11th century, though most of what stands today was rebuilt between the 16th and 19th centuries after repeated damage; the site came under the protection of the merchant Shantidas Jhaveri in the 17th century, and the Anandji Kalyanji trust has looked after it since. What visitors remember is the approach: a long stone stairway climbing the hill to about 600 m, with marble spires appearing in tiers as you rise.
November to February is the sensible window — Saurashtra is dry and cool, and the climb, which is fully exposed, is bearable in the morning. Kartik Purnima (Nov) marks the end of Chaturmas and the reopening of the pilgrimage, and draws very large crowds up the hill; Fagun Sud Teras (Feb–Mar), when pilgrims walk the longer circuit around the hill, is similarly heavy. March onward turns hot, and the monsoon months are the traditional pause in the pilgrimage.
Bhavnagar Airport is the nearest, roughly 55–60 km away, with Ahmedabad (about 215 km) the nearest large airport for most flight connections. Palitana has its own railway station on the Bhavnagar line, a few kilometres from the foot of the hill; Bhavnagar, about 50–55 km away, is the bigger railhead. By road, state buses and taxis run to Palitana from Bhavnagar (roughly 1.5–2 hours) and from Ahmedabad; the last stretch from Palitana town to the base of the steps is a short auto or taxi ride.
This is a hard climb — a stone stairway of several thousand steps up to about 600 m, and the same distance back down, with no vehicle access to the top. Most pilgrims start before dawn to finish before the sun is high. Doli (palanquin) bearers are available at the base for elders and those who cannot walk it, and should be negotiated before starting. By long-standing rule nobody, including priests, stays on the hill after sunset, so the descent must be completed the same day, and food is not eaten on the hill. Leather items — belts, wallets, footwear, bags — are not permitted, and modest dress is expected. Confirm current entry and darshan timings, and the state of the pilgrimage during the monsoon months, with the temple trust before you travel.

How many steps are there at Palitana, and how long does the climb take?
It is a stone stairway of several thousand steps (sources quote figures between roughly 3,500 and 3,800). Most reasonably fit walkers take two to three hours up and a little less coming down, with rest points and drinking water along the way. Elders and children should plan a pre-dawn start and allow much longer.
Can elderly parents who cannot climb still have darshan?
Yes. Doli or palkhi bearers carry pilgrims up and down from the base of the hill for a fee agreed in advance. There is no road or lift to the summit, so this is the only alternative to walking. Anyone with a heart condition or serious knee trouble should take medical advice first — it is a long ascent at altitude in open sun.
Can non-Jains visit the temples?
Visitors of other faiths are generally permitted on the hill and at the temples, subject to the same rules everyone follows — no leather, modest dress, no food, and coming down before evening. Some inner sanctums and certain rituals are reserved for Jain worshippers, and photography is restricted in parts of the complex, so follow the signage and the trust's staff on site.
