Swaminarayan Akshardham in Gandhinagar is a modern temple complex built by the BAPS Swaminarayan Sanstha, inspired by Yogiji Maharaj and completed under Pramukh Swami Maharaj. It was inaugurated in 1992 after about thirteen years of work, and its central shrine holds a seven-foot gold-leafed murti of Bhagwan Swaminarayan, worshipped by followers of this Vaishnav tradition as God. The mandir itself is its most distinctive feature: roughly 108 feet high and 240 feet long, carved from about 6,000 tonnes of Rajasthani pink sandstone with 97 pillars and 17 domes, and built without steel or iron in keeping with traditional shilpa-shastra practice. Around it lie 23 acres of grounds with exhibition halls, the Nilkanth Vatika with its large bronze murti, an evening water show, and roughly fifteen acres of gardens, which is why families usually come here for a half-day rather than a quick darshan.
October to March is the comfortable window — Gujarat's summer heat from April to June is hard on elders, and the complex involves a fair amount of walking in the open. Diwali and the Annakut offering, along with Swaminarayan Jayanti in the spring, draw the largest gatherings; expect long security and cloakroom queues on those days and on weekends generally.
The nearest airport is Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport at Ahmedabad, roughly 20-25 km away, with taxis and buses running to Gandhinagar. Gandhinagar Capital railway station is the closest railhead at about 2 km, while Ahmedabad Junction is around 30 km. By road the temple sits in Sector 20 in Gandhinagar, about 30 km from Ahmedabad via the Sarkhej-Gandhinagar highway or Motera road, with regular state buses and taxis on the route.
Cameras, mobile phones and other electronic items are not permitted inside — they must be switched off and left in the free cloakroom before the security check, so plan for that queue. A dress code applies: upper wear must cover shoulders, chest, upper arms and navel, and lower wear must be at least below the knee; a sarong is lent at the entrance against a refundable deposit if needed. The complex is closed every Monday. Timings for the mandir, exhibitions and the evening water show vary, so confirm with the temple before you travel.

Is Akshardham Gandhinagar open on Mondays?
No. The complex is closed every Monday. On other days the mandir, exhibitions and water show run on separate schedules, so confirm current timings with the temple before you plan your day.
Can I carry my phone or camera inside?
No. Mobile phones, cameras and electronic gadgets are not allowed in the complex. A free cloakroom at the entrance holds them, and items must be switched off before deposit. Carry as little as possible to keep the security check quick, especially if you are travelling with elders.
How much time should we keep for a visit?
Most families keep three to four hours. The mandir darshan itself is short, but the exhibition halls, Nilkanth Vatika, gardens and the evening water show are what take the time. If you want to see the water show, plan to arrive in the late afternoon.
Is it suitable for elderly parents?
Yes, the grounds are level and there is no climb or long stairway, but there is a good deal of walking between the mandir, exhibitions and gardens, much of it in the open. Go in the cooler months, carry water, and allow rest breaks.
