The Sun Temple at Modhera is an 11th-century temple to Surya, the sun god, built under the Chaulukya (Solanki) king Bhima I after 1026-27 CE, with the assembly hall added later in the same century. It stands on the bank of the Pushpavati in Mehsana district and is laid out in three parts on one east-west line: the Surya Kund, a large rectangular stepped tank ringed with tiers of steps and dozens of miniature shrines; the Sabhamandapa, an open pillared hall carried on 52 carved pillars; and the Gudhamandapa, the shrine hall whose outer walls carry images of Surya holding lotuses and riding his seven-horse chariot. The building is aligned so that at the equinoxes the rising sun reaches into the sanctum, and the Surya Kund — one of the largest and most elaborate temple tanks in western India — is what most visitors come to see. It is a centrally protected monument of the Archaeological Survey of India and was placed on UNESCO's tentative World Heritage list in December 2022.
November to February is the comfortable window; north Gujarat is very hot from March to June and the open stone courtyard offers almost no shade. The third weekend of January brings the three-day Uttarardha Mahotsav (Modhera Dance Festival), held in the temple courtyard after Uttarayan, when classical dancers perform against the lit temple — the most atmospheric time to come, and also the most crowded. The equinox days around 21 March and 22 September draw photographers for the sunrise alignment. Confirm festival dates with Gujarat Tourism before you book, as they shift each year.
The nearest airport is Ahmedabad (Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International), about 95 km away, roughly two hours by taxi. The nearest railhead is Mehsana Junction, about 28 km, around 40 minutes by road, with frequent trains from Ahmedabad. By road Modhera is roughly 26 km from Mehsana, about 83 km from Gandhinagar and about 99-101 km from Ahmedabad on good highway, which makes it an easy day trip; most visitors combine it with the Rani ki Vav stepwell at Patan, further north.
This is important to know before you plan a yatra around it: Modhera is no longer a living temple. Worship is not performed here, the original image of Surya is gone, and there is no darshan, no puja and no prasad — it is an ASI-protected archaeological monument that you visit as heritage. There is a ticket counter, and there is a 3-D projection and heritage lighting show in the evenings; confirm the show and monument hours with the site before you travel. The Surya Kund has many steep, unrailed stone steps down to the water, so elders should stay on the upper terrace, and the courtyard stone gets very hot underfoot by midday.

Can we do puja or darshan at Modhera Sun Temple?
No. The temple has not been an active place of worship for centuries and the sanctum image no longer exists. It is maintained by the Archaeological Survey of India as a monument, so there is no priest, no aarti and no prasad. Families visiting for religious reasons usually pair it with the Becharaji (Bahucharaji) Shakti temple nearby, which is a living shrine.
Is one visit enough, or should we stay overnight?
Two to three hours covers the tank, the assembly hall and the shrine comfortably. Most travellers do it as a day trip from Ahmedabad, or stay a night in Mehsana if they also want Patan's Rani ki Vav and the evening light show at Modhera.
Is it manageable for elderly parents?
The main level is flat and walkable, and the temple can be seen fully from the upper terrace of the tank. The descent into the Surya Kund is steep stepped stone with no handrails and should be skipped by anyone unsteady. Carry water, a hat and footwear you can slip off easily, and go early morning or late afternoon.
