Somnath, on the Saurashtra coast at Prabhas Patan near Veraval, is dedicated to Shiva and is counted as the first of the twelve Jyotirlingas. Its name means "lord of the moon," and tradition holds that Soma, the moon god, worshipped Shiva here; the same shore is remembered in tradition as the place where Krishna departed the world. The temple's history is one of repeated destruction and rebuilding over centuries, under rulers including Mahmud of Ghazni, Alauddin Khalji's forces, Muzaffar Shah I and Aurangzeb, with the present Maru-Gurjara style temple completed in 1951 after reconstruction was ordered by Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel. Its most distinctive feature is its position facing the open Arabian Sea, marked by the Baan Stambh, an arrow pillar bearing an inscription that there is no land in a straight line from that point to the South Pole.
October to March, when the coast is cool and dry and walking the seafront and temple courtyard is comfortable; April to June is hot and the monsoon months are wet and humid. Maha Shivaratri (usually February or March) and Kartik Purnima are the two big observances here, and Maha Shivaratri in particular draws very large crowds from across India, so rooms fill early and waiting lines are long. Elders who cannot stand for long are better served by an ordinary weekday visit outside these festivals.
The temple sits at Prabhas Patan, roughly 6-7 km from Veraval Junction, with Somnath railway station in Somnath town itself, a short drive from the temple gate; trains run from Ahmedabad, Rajkot, Okha, Porbandar and further afield. The nearest airports are the small ones at Keshod and Diu, each under about 90 km by road, with Rajkot around 200 km away and Ahmedabad's Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport about 400 km. Road access is good — state and private buses and taxis run from Ahmedabad, Rajkot, Junagadh, Diu and Dwarka — and Somnath is usually combined with Dwarka on a Gujarat yatra circuit.
The trust prohibits all electronics inside — mobile phones, cameras, smartwatches, laptops and tablets — and photography is not permitted within the temple. Free cloakroom lockers and shoe storage are provided near the entrance, and visitors are frisked at security, so carry as little as possible. Modest dress is expected; leather items are not allowed inside. The trust states that prayer is offered by those who have faith in Hinduism. Confirm darshan and aarti timings with the temple before you travel, as they change.

Is Somnath the first Jyotirlinga?
Yes. Somnath is traditionally counted as the first of the twelve Jyotirlinga shrines of Shiva, which is why it is usually the opening stop on a Jyotirlinga yatra.
Can I take my phone or camera inside the Somnath temple?
No. Mobile phones, cameras, smartwatches and other electronic items are prohibited, and photography inside is not allowed. Deposit them in the free cloakroom lockers near the entrance before you join the queue.
Can Somnath and Dwarka be done in one trip?
Yes, this is the usual Gujarat pilgrimage pairing. The two are on the same Saurashtra coast and are commonly covered together by road or rail over a few days, often with Junagadh or Diu added in between.
Is the darshan queue hard for elderly pilgrims?
On ordinary days the walk from the gate to the sanctum is manageable and the trust provides wheelchair and buggy assistance for those with mobility difficulty. On Maha Shivaratri and other festival days the crowds are heavy and the wait can be long, so plan a non-festival date if elders are travelling.
