Koteshwar Mahadev is a Shiva temple standing at the very western edge of inhabited India, on the shore of the Kori Creek in Lakhpat taluka of Kutch, where the dry Kutch land ends and the Arabian Sea begins. Tradition holds that Ravana was given a powerful linga by Shiva and dropped it here, whereupon it multiplied into a crore of identical lingas — the name Koteshwar is understood as "lord of a crore" — and the original is said to remain enshrined in this temple. The site is old enough to appear in the 7th-century account of the Chinese traveller Hiuen Tsiang, who described a busy religious settlement here; the present stone temple, raised on a platform and shielded from the sea by a wall, was rebuilt in 1820 by the merchants Sundarji and Jetha Shivji. Most pilgrims pair it with Narayan Sarovar a short distance away, one of the five sacred lakes of the Panch-Sarovar, so the two are almost always done as a single trip.
October to March, when Kutch is dry and mild and the coastal air is comfortable for elders; March to June is genuinely punishing desert heat and best avoided. Mahashivratri (February or March) draws large crowds of Shiva devotees, and the Kartik fair at neighbouring Narayan Sarovar brings thousands of pilgrims — good for atmosphere, harder for a slow-moving family. Outside those days the shrine stays relatively quiet compared with Gujarat's bigger temples.
The nearest airport is Bhuj, with domestic flights from Mumbai, Ahmedabad and Delhi; the temple is roughly 150–180 km from Bhuj by road (sources vary), about four hours through open Kutch country. Bhuj is also the practical railhead, connected by daily express trains to Ahmedabad and Mumbai; the closest small station is Naliya, roughly 60 km from Narayan Sarovar. State buses run from Bhuj to Narayan Sarovar only about twice a day, so most families hire a car in Bhuj and cover Koteshwar, Narayan Sarovar and Lakhpat Fort in one day.
This is a remote border area with very thin facilities — carry drinking water, medicines and photo ID for everyone in the vehicle, as checkposts on the Lakhpat road may ask for it. Public transport is minimal and there is little by way of hotels or restaurants at the temple itself, so plan to return to Bhuj or stay at the modest Narayan Sarovar dharamshalas. There is no long climb or trek. Confirm darshan timings with the temple before you travel.

Is Koteshwar a Jyotirlinga?
No. Koteshwar is not among the twelve Jyotirlingas. It is an ancient and much-revered Shiva shrine in its own right, known for the legend that the linga here multiplied into a crore, and for being the westernmost temple in inhabited India.
Can we visit Koteshwar and Narayan Sarovar on the same day?
Yes, and almost everyone does. The two are only a few kilometres apart and are treated as one pilgrimage. A day trip from Bhuj covering both, with Lakhpat Fort added on the way, is the usual plan.
Do we need a special permit to visit the temple?
No permit is needed for the temple itself. Permits are only required if you want to go to a BSF border outpost, and those are issued by the authorities at Bhuj — no travel agent can arrange entry beyond what the security posts allow. Carry Aadhaar or another photo ID as a matter of course.
Is it suitable for elderly parents?
The temple is on a raised platform with a modest set of steps and no trek, so the shrine itself is manageable. The long road journey from Bhuj and the heat outside the winter months are the real considerations — travel October to February and break the drive.
