Kapilash is a Shiva temple on a hill about 2,239 feet high in Dhenkanal district, where the deity is worshipped as Chandrasekhar. A temple inscription records that King Narasimhadeva I of the Eastern Ganga dynasty built the shrine for Sri Chandrasekhar in 1246 CE, and an older lingam on the hill, Vishwanath, is locally called the Budha Linga. The main tower stands about 60 feet tall in the Kalinga style, with a wooden jagamohana in front and two tanks, Payamruta Kunda and Marichi Kunda, on either side. Tradition holds that the hill was the ashram of the sage Kapila, and Odia devotees speak of it as a second Kailash, which is why pilgrims from across the state climb it rather than treating it as a roadside stop.
October to February is the comfortable window, when the hill is cool and dry and the climb is manageable for elders. Maha Shivaratri, in February or March, is the temple's biggest occasion and draws thousands through the night, so expect very heavy crowds and slow movement on the steps that day. Avoid June to September, when the rock steps get slippery in the monsoon.
The nearest airport is Biju Patnaik International Airport, Bhubaneswar, roughly 100 to 110 km away by road, about two and a half hours by taxi. Dhenkanal is the nearest railhead, on the Howrah-Chennai main line, about 26 km from the hill; taxis, buses and jeeps run from Dhenkanal town and bus stand to the foot of Kapilash. By road the hill is reached off the Dhenkanal-Kamakhyanagar side, and a winding motor road via Barabanki takes vehicles most of the way up for those who cannot take the steps.
The traditional approach is a flight of 1,352 stone steps up the hillside, which is a long and steep climb for elders, children and anyone with knee or heart trouble. There is a second, winding motor road via Barabanki that avoids most of the climb, so plan the vehicle route in advance if walking is difficult. Confirm darshan timings and any festival-day arrangements with the temple before you travel.

How many steps are there at Kapilash Temple, and is there a way to avoid them?
The main stairway has 1,352 steps. There is also a winding motor road via Barabanki that carries vehicles up much of the hill, which is what most elderly pilgrims and families with small children use. Ask your driver to take the road route if the climb is not possible.

It is the most important day at the temple and the atmosphere is extraordinary, but it is also punishingly crowded, with thousands of devotees on the hill through the night. If you are travelling with elders, a quieter winter weekday is the easier choice. Check timings with the temple before you go.
